Does anyone watch the press conference regularly?

I don’t, so I’m wondering if today is the first time suicidal people got a mention.

DDIJ - but do you happen to know if they mentioned it before?

If it’s considered unwise, then it’s even more a good sign they dared say it today.

Its beem mentioned before a couple of times by various journalists

LilacTree1 · 30/04/2020 19:59

Thanks smiling

Good to know it’s on their radar

Glad it was raised it can't keep getting swept under the carpet.

People don't like to talk about it but that didn't help the 6500 who died of it last year. It needs to be out in open and this will help stop people talking to others about how they are feeling. That was last year's figures without any threat of covid or the economic implications about job loses.

Sunday and Monday were rough for me I felt like ending it, I live alone in a flat no garden, no partner, very few friends I'm still having to go to work but I have no outlet, I even used to enjoy sitting and reading a book on the grass in the park but even that's been taken away.

BBCONEANDTWO · 30/04/2020 21:10

@HeresMe I feel for you - so sorry you're going through this alone and with no real support. It must be terrible for you hugs to you x

LilacTree1 · 30/04/2020 21:22

Here “I even used to enjoy sitting and reading a book on the grass in the park but even that's been taken away.”

Yup. 400 sq feet in a tower block with cladding. Gets so hot, the fridge freezer doesn’t work.

It’s os going to be desperate in summer. What happens if they take me to court and I can’t pay?

Lilac that's thing, there is lots on here who live in there nice houses with gardens with well paid jobs, but fail to see how everybody else lives, I don't begrudge anybody any of these things but a bit of empathy. BeKind looked good on social media but didn't last.

What some on here have been saying to people suffering mental health issues is exactly same as me going to someone with Covid come on you aren't really trying to breath are you.

Lilac look after yourself you are doing best you can at moment.

HeresMe · 30/04/2020 21:41

@BBCONEANDTWO

Thank you will just get through the rough days, just want a bit of daylight at end of tunnel.

hopeforlucky3 · 30/04/2020 21:44

My OHs friend followed through with suicide last week. IMO it needs to be talked about in the media more.

LilacTree1 · 30/04/2020 21:46

hope I’m sorry

I agree it needs to be talked about more

I was lying on the sofa thinking about ways to do it when the question popped up on the screen. The fact that they’ve acknowledged some of us are suicidal is important.

OP posts:
LilacTree1 · 30/04/2020 22:10

Here I also think those people live in nice areas. Some of them say they go running at night. They’d not do that in the area I live in.

“ What some on here have been saying to people suffering mental health issues is exactly same as me going to someone with Covid come on you aren't really trying to breath are you.”

So much this!

There have been 3 people I know commit suicide since lockdown, young people too. The effect this is having on people with mental health issues is going to be bad. And the fact that they won't be able to access help. It's sad.

Maighdeann · 30/04/2020 22:16

One attempted, one succeeded. Families devastated. So very, very sad - they deserve to be acknowledged.

Maighdeann · 30/04/2020 22:26

@lilactree1. I have no inspirational words to help you as I'm a bit lost in the fuckwittery of it all too. It is a gigantic mindfuck.I hope there's some way you can be kind to yourself Thanks

ClaraMumsnet · 30/04/2020 22:55

Hi OP,

We hope you don't mind, but when these threads are flagged up to us we usually add a link to our Mental Health resources. You can also go to the Samaritans website or email them on [email protected].

We're also posting this for anyone else who's reading and is feeling low at the moment. These are really tough times but you're not alone Flowers

FlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowersFlowers

This is sad reading. All I can do is send flowers to people.

The impact on mental health across the board is and will be huge.

Runningfar · 30/04/2020 23:07

I know it seems a bit meaningless but I just want to send well wishes to you op, and to those who are struggling Thanks

Remember that this is temporary. We won't be like this forever.

I'd also urge anyone to go outside and get fresh air if you need it. Please don't get too caught up by all the loons on here who scream murderer because you sat on a park bench.

LilacTree1 · 30/04/2020 23:21

Thank you

I just heard there’s an advert shown with an elderly person touching the hand of a younger visitor - through a window? I think perhaps they are trying to kill the elderly. I hope no one’s parents see that!

Are there any organisations that keep stats on deaths by suicide?

Tomorrow I will write to my MP about this issue and copy it to
No 10.

I agree it needs to be talked about more

I think the reason it's not talked about so much and the suicides aren't reported in the press much is because there's loads of evidence that the more suicide is talked about the more it increases. I think this is particularly true of young people and teens, suicide can be, sort of, contagious, self harm as well.

At the same time people need to talk about how they feel, it's a really difficult line to walk. Flowers

Beckyk12 · 30/04/2020 23:23

I’m also glad they mentioned it in today’s conference, I have often thought ‘why is no-one acknowledging this ?’ So it was reassuring to hear them talk about it and also to let people know that they are not forgotten, I feel so bad for the mental health tsunami that is building up and hope to god they invest more money into talking therapies etc

LastTrainEast · 30/04/2020 23:26

hopeforlucky3 it has been shown that talking about suicide on forums can lead to more. There are numbers to call for people who need help..

Good for you.
I think it's not just suicide, there is going to be massive collateral damage from CV, other illnesses going untreated, domestic violence has rocketed. CV isn't the only thing that matters I get really annoyed by people acting as if it is.

LilacTree1 · 30/04/2020 23:28

Ken “there is going to be massive collateral damage from CV, other illnesses going untreated, domestic violence has rocketed. CV isn't the only thing that matters I get really annoyed by people acting as if it is.”

Yes. I think NSPCC said they have a 20% increase in calls.

Teens are a particular worry I think. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a teen stuck in with family for several weeks.

LastTrainEast

Do you happen to know if there's any research into just talking about depression/anxiety etc without mentioning suicide, is that helpful or also counterproductive?
