Over 50s

I’ve just seen an article stating:

The over-50s should be kept in lockdown for longer than younger groups and fined if they cannot prove their age when out and about, researchers at the University of Warwick have suggested.

I’ve been pinning my hopes on seeing my patents and in laws some time in the near future and now I feel utterly devastated. Sorry if I sound dramatic, I’m not sure how much more of this I can take.

i'm damned if I'm staying under house arrest while my obese 35 year old neighbour wobbles into town

and all the fat ones

90? most people would find that OK - there aren't many 90 year olds around, and most of them are tucked neatly out of sight in care homes

Jesus. The nastiness on these threads is getting out of hand

God save us from young 'research' wankers who want anyone over 50 to hide under a rock and never come out. I really do think they'd be happy it this world was like Logans Run and you had a button on your palm that glowed when your time was up when you got to 30.

I'm 57 and my DH is 66, still both working full time. If someone wants to pay our bills and give us the same income that we have now then fine, until then jog on.

Noteverythingisblackandwhite Garden centres are open again where I live (London). Things seem to be changing.

Jesus. The nastiness on these threads is getting out of hand Try reading what I was actually saying. The sad fact is, as witnessed by the ageism here, and across society generally, combined with the fact that 90 year olds aren't enabled to have a full part in society, that there wouldn't be a huge outcry if 90 year olds were told they couldn't go out.

sanealaddin · 30/04/2020 21:18

My friend's mum is 90. She has no significant health issues, drives, gardens and does everything many 60 year olds do. She's already fading from being stuck at home. No way should she do it indefinitely.

I understood there was a rumour that it was the over 70s who had to stay locked down until a vaccine was available
My feelings about this - which are not ageist as I am over 70 myself - is that the over 70s would all be in receipt of the state pension (and the most comfortable with a nice cushy private/public pension) and they pay tax just as everyone else does (In fact we have paid at least 40 years of tax and NI ). If they were encouraged to stay in if they had health problems - there would be no need to provide furlough pay or grants as they already get 'paid'.

The under 70s could continue to work if they wanted and get the economy moving again.

Personally - I don't go out much but would like the 'freedom' to be able to do so if I wish. The economy will not miss me as I don't buy much stuff anyway.

Where did you see this?
I saw an article in the Daily Mail earlier saying that.
Basically people speculating and chatting shit (kind of like on here lol, not aimed at anyone in particular) to fill column spaces.
It was all "could do" "might do" and one person with a big opinion.
Doesn't mean anything.
I'd rather go on facts than all this endless speculating and randomers opinions of what "should" happen.
Everyone over 50? Can you imagine? That's a hell of a lot of the population,

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/04/2020 21:30

yeah right, im a keyworker and 50

Ledkr · 01/05/2020 09:52

Lol. Im 53 a keyworker as is dh and we have young kids.
Im happy to chill out for a bit longer but not sure my employers or kids will Grin

I can't say I'm a fan of draconian restrictions like this, blanket bans on age groups without any consideration of health, or even 'having to prove your age'. I would fail on the latter as I don't have a driving license nor passport!

Really I will be very surprised if an over-50 lockdown is put in place. We don't even have that now!
