So angry! How unfair is this !!!

So I went on maternity in March and only receive statutory maternity pay, so £600pm.
Now the government have decided that anyone who went on maternity on or after 25th April can be furloughed and receive 80% of their normal wage !

How is that fair. I’m here struggling and others will be receiving 80% of their normal pay ! 😡

Anyone else in the same position or think that this is wrong ?
Okay, good for those who are lucky enough to be receiving it but why give one without the other.

Oh another I’m so hard done by post. At least you have an income right now unlike many of us.

cocklepicker · 27/04/2020 18:32

So you'd be happy to go back to work next month? If so, go for it

cjpark · 27/04/2020 18:35

Congratulations on your baby. Im sorry, and no its not fair but there has to be a cut off date. Its not fair that there is a pandemic but life is not fair. Im now in my 8th week of my business being shut and 8th week of no money coming in. Not many people's life is fair at the mo.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 27/04/2020 18:35

You were being paid £600 before furlough and you're being paid £600 after. What would you have been paid if there was no pandemic? If the answer is £600 then why are you bothered?

imsooverthisdrama · 27/04/2020 18:36

Sorry but your a cheeky cow , your on maternity leave you've planned for this so likely 6 months minimum. You're unlikely to be made redundant while on maternity leave . Furloughed staff is till end of June then most will go back to work that's if they do ever go back .
I'll come back later this year when a lot of people have lost their jobs and you will still have one .
And yeah life isn't fair , grow up none of this is fair .

katmarie · 27/04/2020 18:37

Just to clarify, you should not be working from home if you are on furlough. It's an either/or situation. You are either working, from home or your workplace, or on furlough and thus not working, but ready to return immediately. Furlough pay is a retainer to ensure you remain employed and in a position to start work again, whenever your employer needs you. Unless I was only planning to take a very short maternity, theres no way I'd opt for furlough over mat pay. You could be called back to work three weeks from now. Thars the trade off. You're not going to get furlough pay and a year's maternity leave if your baby was due in April, it simply doesn't work like that

user1468953505 · 27/04/2020 18:38

This sucks for you.

I am self employed and am earning almost nothing. I won't get any government help. It sucks for me.

Try to focus on the good things and the positives or it'll drive you mad.

Rubyroost · 27/04/2020 18:39

Thanks @katmarie for clarification. 👍

cabbageking · 27/04/2020 18:43

You only get 80% if you end your maternity leave.

dreamingofsun · 27/04/2020 18:47

so i'm working 30 hours a week whilst loads of people i know arent and getting 80% pay. Ideally i'd like to be made redundant but thats not going to happen either . thats the way life is. just be thankful that nothing more serious has happened to you. we are all just having to accept things

dreamingofsun · 27/04/2020 18:48

just be thankful you arent on a coronavirus ward, where you are working loads more hours than you should, you may get infected and your kids are being looked after by someone else because you cant. Or people i work with who are expected to work and look after their young kids at the same time

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 27/04/2020 18:52

OP you are in exactly the same position you would have been had COVID19 not happened. Why on earth do you think you should profit from a pandemic?

maria860 · 27/04/2020 18:54

I don't think it's unfair as you went on mat leave this situation want foreseeable for anyone at the time so it was the luck of the draw really. I understand it's frustrating but not unfair I'm pregnant I've been furloughed I should be going on mat leave August and will get 90% of eight weeks earnings so bearing in mind I'm furloughed till June at the earliest I think then I will get 90% of the 80% I'm getting at the moment according to this so I will be in an even worse position financially then I am now when I go on mat leave it's just one of those things.

SilverFox90 · 27/04/2020 18:57

Thanks for the comments, even the snotty ones.

For those smart arses that are talking about furlough ends your maternity, end your maternity and be furloughed blah blah! The guild lines from the gov website were updated last week. You can now be furloughed and be/ stay on maternity. What happens when lockdown finished and the furlough scheme ends I don’t know. I’m just saying I’m pissed off that I’ve missed out. Yes I will admit I’m a bit jealous. But lets just say for example you started a job and a colleague started a month after you. You both had the exact same job and contributed equally. Then they got a pay rise and you didn’t. It would piss you off.
And for the other silly comments! I had a child because I could afford to have a child, I can survive on statutory maternity pay. I wouldn’t of had a baby if I couldn’t afford it. Do I have to budged hard and go without the luxury’s yes. That’s a sacrifice I happily made when deciding to have a child and I don’t regret it. Just saying, it would have been nice if the government made this new policy for furlough pay on maternity more diverse.
I do also feel for those in this time that are really struggling and not entitled to anything other than universal credit.

To be angry because you're not profiting from a global pandemic is pretty self centred
Agree with this.
Enjoy your time with your baby.
Don’t compare yourself to others.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 27/04/2020 19:03

I think it's fair that you want to vent, to be fair. But... read the room.

That said, I do appreciate it's frustrating, especially if you've got colleagues in the same position but are getting furloughed pay!

Hope you and your baby are keeping sane and safe.

ploopsie · 27/04/2020 19:06

Just saying, it would have been nice if the government made this new policy for furlough pay on maternity more diverse.

So how far should they go back?

FleecyMoo · 27/04/2020 19:10

My daughter and I started a business at the end of last year so we don't have a tax return to show and are, therefore, not eligible for any help from the government :( We now have no income and still have to pay off the large loan that we took out to start the business. Life can be difficult sometimes can't it?

Hope you are enjoying life with your baby though, as weird as things currently are :)

newyearnoeu · 27/04/2020 19:10

agree with everyone else who has said, no it's not fair, but then neither is life.

I mean, is it fair that some companies have kept staff on and furloughed them, while others couldn't be bothered with the faff and payment up front and have just sacked them?

Is it fair that people who were inbetween jobs, or someone who had a job lined up but hadn't yet started it, are still only getting standard JSA of £70 p/w while the furloughed are getting up to £2500 per month?

Is it fair that a carer or HCA is expected to still keep working to exhaustion, putting themself and their family in danger, for £9 p/h, while a business manager can sit at home and get paid thousands for not working?

Is it fair that my friend can still see her family on her daily walk because they live close by, whereas mine are too far away?

Is it fair that some people have died from Covid and others haven't?

You haven't actually lost anything that you were expecting to get, so you're luckier than a lot of people.

Staticelle · 27/04/2020 19:14

You are recieveing exactly the amount that you thought you would be. Something would be unfair if you were having money you were expecting taken off you, stop being so salty and take a look around you at what's going on.

amber763 · 27/04/2020 19:14

But you're in maternity leave, why would you expect the government to pay you furlough pay when you're not furloughed 🤔 I don't think what other people are getting is any concern of yours.

Mapril · 27/04/2020 19:15

Unfair would be finding out you were going to be worse off than you were originally promised and subsequently planned for.

This just has to be filed away in the Shit Happens box.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 27/04/2020 19:15

It is what it is, obviously you knew what money you would be getting for the duration of your mat leave and planned accordingly, those furloughed don’t have that security, it could end tomorrow and they’d have nothing.
