Just want to get a gripe off my chest!

I went to the local corner shop for some milk. There was a family of 5 people including two children standing directly in front of the entrance. A little boy appeared to be upset about something.

I stood quietly and waited. I bided my time by putting on a mask. After a while, one of the women noticed me. She said, "It's alright love. We're not waiting."

I stood, waiting for her to get the idea that I didn't want to get so close. She seemed annoyed and gestured to the door, telling me to go ahead.

I responded (possibly sounding irritated), "I can't go in. I'm waiting for you to move."

They all chorused, "You can go!"

I said, "You need to be 6 feet away."

They angrily jeered at this.

The man snapped, "Can't you see that we're sorting out our child?" I responded that I had been waiting, and was just responding to them.

They yelled at me and said I didn't need to go on about it and how rude I am. Then the man said that he hates Americans (I have an American accent).

This lockdown is really bringing out the best in people!

You made no mistakes. Some people are arses and this situation probably makes them worse. Be glad you're not locked down in that household!!

dellacucina · 26/04/2020 17:43

@ANoiseAnnoys 😅 noted.

pilates · 26/04/2020 17:47

They were rude, you were not

ElizaCrouch · 26/04/2020 17:47

You weren't rude op. They were arseholes.

TheStuffedPenguin · 26/04/2020 17:52

They were rude and stupid and selfish - why 5 in a shop ? Totally unnecessary . They reacted like that because they knew they were wrong .

lljkk · 26/04/2020 18:02

Ok, they were arses, but The mask isn't much good if it can't protect you in that situation where you would have been within 2m of them for under 10 seconds.

Couldn't you have just walked round them? It sounds as if you were just trying to make a point and it probably got their backs up.

Flaxmeadow · 26/04/2020 18:33

You weren't rude OP they sound like a family of louts.

It's interesting watching peoples behaviour in queues and the like. Especially men.

I've been in queues outside supermarkets and some men have done this odd strutting thing where they walk towards it making disapproving noises, as if they think it's all a waste of time or a big joke whike ooking around for attention and approval .

Then there are the ones who join the queue but walk up to the end of it really close to everyone else. Which defeats the whole purpose

Once inside I would say 80% of people do no social distancing at all. Infact here hardly anyone has even bothered from the start. Which is frustrating when you're trying your best. It always seems to be me that moves out of the way

BTW I went to the USA last year and I found the people charming and lovely

Toomuchtrouble4me · 26/04/2020 18:35

Bloody hell - where are you all marching off to with kids and prams and cars - just stay in ffs.

Thefaceofboe · 26/04/2020 18:36

Absolutely idiotic. Our local shop has been great with maintaining social distancing, went to a different one yesterday and there were a family of 4 in there, mum pushing toddler round on one of them trikes and other child running up and down the isles. My partner asked them if it was really necessary for them all to be in the small shop and he got an ear full Confused

Deathraystare · 26/04/2020 18:36

Actually (let me get this off my chest!!!) it is amazing how many people are standing in the way and NOT in the queue even though they are right in the way. I am constantly having to ask if they are in hte queue or not. Morons!

ChrisPrattsFace · 26/04/2020 18:38

The same happened to me in the super marked. A lady was stood in the centre of the aisle, I didn’t want to walk past her (narrow aisle too!) so I waited for her to move forward, a que formed behind me all waiting for her to move and she started shouting at us telling us we deserved to get sick if we were going to be so anal about passing people.
If the aisle were standard wide ones then I probably would have... but just to piss her off I followed her round and never passed when she told me to.
Because I’m that petty. 😂😂

PeanutDouglas · 26/04/2020 18:38

You could have used your voice and ask them to move so you could go in. You sound a bit precious tbh.

Deathraystare · 26/04/2020 18:40

You don't expect men to queue do you? Good heavens!

agonyauntie2020 · 26/04/2020 18:43

ANoiseAnnoys
I get the accent is a bit annoying but how can you hate a whole massive country of people?

Seriously, you get the accent is a bit annoying? Just wondering if you have thought about how you would feel if you lived in the US and someone abused you in the local shop, you post on here for support, and someone else posts what's obviously intended as a supportive message but adds that your accent is a bit annoying.

We all have accents and we like other people's or we don't....(e.g. Geordie vs Scouse). I just don't get why some people think it's fine to say all American accents are annoying TO THEIR FACES as though this is a given (I've seen this sort of thing before on mumsnet).

OP, to lots of us neither you nor your accent are annoying for being American. Those people were being dicks.

YANBU
They were should have moved. It was your expectation that they would move so I understand why you said nothing.

JudyCoolibar · 26/04/2020 18:58

You could have just said excuse me, and been a little understanding about it even though it is annoying they were blocking the entrance. They were rude but so were you.

Why, @Alb1? OP was simply waiting quietly - she wasn't demanding that they get out of the way. It was the other people making a fuss.

Or didn't you bother to read OP's post? If so, wasn't that a bit rude of you?

purpleboy · 26/04/2020 18:59

You weren't rude at all op. You did absolutely nothing wrong.
Also as someone who spent every school holiday in the states growing up, I love the American accents, especially New Yorkers.Grin

JudyCoolibar · 26/04/2020 18:59

You could have used your voice and ask them to move so you could go in. You sound a bit precious tbh.

Again, why, @PeanutDouglas? OP was simply waiting quietly and using the time to sort out her mask. What on earth is precious about that?

Zaphodsotherhead · 26/04/2020 19:03

I thought that walking past people was fine (as long as nobody coughs on anyone else), but it was being closer than 2m for around 15 minutes that was dangerous for virus spreading?

So walking round a shop closer than 2m would equal more than 15 minutes, but walking past someone would equal around 2 seconds?

Alb1 · 26/04/2020 19:07

@JudyCoolibar I explained in my post why I thought that really, no point me elaborating and sounding like I’m having a go at the OP just to further explain to you. The OP even said she was a little rude.

PeanutDouglas · 26/04/2020 19:09

@JudyCoolibar well no she wasn’t. She was adjusting a mask 🤣 so making a point in a passive aggressive way.
