Ok apologies if theres already a thread on this but I couldn't find it.

So the uk government is making an app which will track everywhere you go and everyone you come into contact with for "contact tracing " this app will be a background app and work constantly. Am I the only one who is very concerned about this and not wanting the uk government to be tracking people.

I know that they claim that it will be run by the NHS and will be "anonymous data" and that they need 80% of smartphones users to download it for it to be effective and it's "for our own benefit " and will help "lift lockdown sooner " and no I am an antivaxer of conspiracy nut but it just feels very wrong and I don't want it on my phone. Can someone please talk some sense into me or reassure me that I've not suddenly joined the tin foil that brigade.

Freedom of speech is incredibly important to me. I don’t want all and sundry to have access to my private conversations or to profile me in any way

Wilmalovescake · 28/04/2020 21:44

Ffs. Tinfoil city here.
How do you want us to get out of this then? You don’t want track and trace, so what do you want?
YABVU. We are over 22,000 deaths now. We all need to do anything we can to get out the other side of this and stop making vulnerable people and key workers alike risk their lives. THAT’S the real risk here.

I’d be more comfortable with the google or apple versions as they will be under more scrutiny regarding data protection

LilacTree1 · 28/04/2020 21:46

Wilma I want us to be more realistic about disease and death frankly.

Iceland apparently used partly the - gasp - old school method of isolating people who tested positive.

LilacTree1 · 28/04/2020 21:47

Why is it tin foil city to want some privacy?

Cabinfever10 · 28/04/2020 21:48

I would also like the google/apple app as there is no central data collection.

I definitely won’t be giving Cummings and his affiliates any info voluntarily. I don’t think we should give up our privacy and rights because they fucked up. Or maybe they wanted it that way ? (yes I know, tinfoil hat and all that).

Boxachocs · 28/04/2020 21:57

@Wilmalovescake I agree with you!

And isolating people who test positive and THEN tracing their contacts is exactly what the app would do! This is what is needed. I’d far rather know if I’ve been near someone who tests positive and this is the way to do it. What possible ulterior motive could there actually be?!
I can’t actually believe people would rather worry about what ridiculous information the government might get!! They will be getting the information they need about tracing contacts IN ORDER TO BLOODY STOP THE SPREAD!

LilacTree1 · 28/04/2020 21:57

Data is currency, it’s worth billions. There’s nothing tin foil hat about recognising that, or realising that government benefit from having it.

Boxachocs · 28/04/2020 21:58

@LilacTree1 The population of Iceland is 364,000. Hardly the same is it?

LilacTree1 · 28/04/2020 21:59

There’s some data folk on the thread here, also concerns about which option is chosen

I don't really get it.
So you get told if you've been near anyone with Covid. You isolate for 7 days, then what, wait for symptoms so you can be tested or not.
As an NHS worker do I turn my phone off at work since my patients are mostly ventilated with no phone so I've been in contact with definatly Covid patients but I don't isolate just wait for symptoms and then get tested.
And how does this work for primary school children who don't have smart phones, they will be ok but the teachers will get no notifications, maybe just as well as acouple of children could remove quite a few teachers to isolate.
So even if we could trust it what does it really do?

We need to think carefully about this. I’m fully up for the google/apple version. I am not up for the government/Cummings version because I find Cummings sinister and I don’t want to end up in a situation that some citizens of other countries find themselves in, where any critical comments of the gov land them in prison, or where any political conversations can only happen in person with loud music blaring over the top because everyone is under surveillance.
