Just that really. Many other countries are encouraging wearing of face masks but our government is not. Should we trust them on this?

Imo they might get sued for telling complete lies that it wont help.
They have a liability and need to protect their staff
Yes we might still get it but lower initial dose maybe.
Cutting down in half the contacts. Realistically you cannot distance in supermarket aisles.

I thought that WHO had issued no endorsement of mask-wearing.

I doubt they will be sued for 'telling lies' about face masks -

Republic of Ireland only issued this statement on Wednesday;

"The new advice does not apply to members of the public, only to healthcare workers. Advice on the HSE website for members of the public states that “wearing a face mask is unlikely to be of any benefit if you are not sick”.

"the idea of using respiratory coverings or mouth coverings to prevent coughing or sneezing... that in itself is not a bad idea,"

so they aren't OPPOSED to the idea. But WHO haven't come out and said "wow great idea, everyone should do that!" either.

they do sound a bit washy-washy about most things...

Aesopfable · 26/04/2020 14:47

here's the petition to make the government back safemasks for all:

Because decisions like this should be based on a petition not scientific advice... Hmm

newfunkychicken · 26/04/2020 15:20

there's been scientific advice in both directions on this...
