Don’t think it’s corona but what else?

My pre teen daughter has lost the sense of taste, has upset stomach, keeps needing an inhaler as she struggles to breath after going up and down the stairs (in the last year she’s only needed her inhaler about 5 times after sports so this is rare).

She hadn’t had a temp (she just constantly cold) or continuous cough which is why I’m thinking it’s not corona but any ideas what else could cause the above?

I’m keeping my eye on her as we live in the highest corona case town so have been in isolation for the last 6 weeks, but because of how many Ill people we know, it’s making me worried.

Has she lost her sense of smell? I think the influence on sense of taste with Covid is thought to be from loss of sense of smell. Not that sense of taste in itself is lost. But I guess the understanding is changing all tthe time so who knows.

My sister in law had corona but didn't have a temp and her cough came and went. Call 111 if you're worried

Mine started not too different to that, the cough came a few days later and lasted weeks. I had the chills. She could have it. Keep a close eye as she's asthmatic

My work are arranging testing for me purely because I have had a headache and other minor symptoms. I have been working on itu surround by Covid-19 though.

A high temperature is a typical symptom, but you can have Covid-19 and not have one. Some of those in China who tested positive had nothing but a stomach upset and as we know many are completely asymptomatic. So please don’t rule it out and please get medical advice regarding the breathlessness if it’s getting worse (or indeed anyway!). In the meantime, rest and fluids. Hope she feels better soon OP.

Btw, my own DD (in a high-risk group) followed by myself a couple of weeks later had a range of similar symptoms to yours minus any temperature/fever. Whether it was ‘it’ or not we don’t know, but I suspect that it may well have been. All fine now - please try not to worry too much

@Gibble1 if you felt able, I’d be interested in your result. We are starting to test people with mild symptoms this week.

Thanks for all the replies, sorry I didn’t rely sooner- my phone battery went.

I’ll be keeping a very close eye on her today and if she needs to use her inhaler again, I’ll phone 111.

I’m just strongly aware that 111 is so busy right now, our neighbour phoned them a few days ago and was in a queue for 45 mins and his wife died while he was waiting to speak to someone. So I’m aware that I don’t want to add to the queue when someone with more serious problems might be trying to get through.

I had no temp and no cough but was told it most probably was cv based on other symptoms. I never get temperatures and although I had chest pain, it never developed into a cough. Very sure it was it. Have a look at the lungs threads for more symptoms of suspected cases.

Your DD is just as deserving as anyone for help if she needs it OP and with asthma she's high risk for things turning bad quickly. I am definitely no expert but once breathing issues occur people can go down hill really quickly so don't wait and don't feel bad about seeking help, better to be safe than sorry.

Glitters100 I hope your daughter’s doing ok. The problems with 111 seem widespread and that’s awful about your neighbour’s wife. Please don’t hold off though if it’s needed.

Thanks Nora, she has been ok and hasn’t needed her inhaler since I started this thread, but she’s due an asthma review tomorrow and the nurse is quite keen to see her so I feel better knowing she’s going to be seen by someone.

However I was going to phone at the first sign of anymore breathlessness because of this thread so I’m glad I asked on here.

I would phone GP before 111 OP.
My GP is '99% certain" that I had Covid late Feb/early March, and I had a low temp and only a slight cough for a couple of days. Who knows though, as no test. But as 111 are overwhelmed, I'd definitely try GP tomorrow, if she's no worse. Obviously, if she deteriorates before GP opens, go elsewhere. Hope she's ok.

@Pomegranatepompom my results came back negative. As did my colleagues- she has been really unwell though. As I said my symptoms were mild and I think probably an asthma flare due to pollen added to an extremely stressful and heartbreaking couple of weeks.

@Gibble1 when did you test? We had people sharing an office who developed symptoms and only half tested positive.

@Pomegranatepompom, I tested on Tuesday morning. Colleague tested on Saturday.

Sounds like corinavirus to me. Children can get sickness and diarrhoea. Dd (12)had very similar symptoms, and my ds has a fever and cough at the same time.

The advice I got was no need for medical intervention unless the breathlessness was happening when sat still vs just when on exertion. My cough came right at the end of it but I did have a high temperature - have you taken her temp as I didn’t realise til doc took it for me
