10k grant for small businesses

DH is self employed, he has an office, he does not pay business rates as it it below the threshold.

Does anyone know if he would be eligible for the 10k grant?

If his office is registered as a business premises and he receives the small business rate rebate (I.e. he gets a business rates bill that is fully offset so pays nothing) from his council then yes.
Call your local council.
I have already received my £10k

Lumene · 18/04/2020 17:51

I thought it had to be a retail or hospitality outlet like a shop?

Lumene · 18/04/2020 17:55

(Asking for a friend)

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 18/04/2020 19:30

It covers small businesses generically as well as retail, leisure, and hospitality.

My business premises are described as a workshop.

If in doubt contact your local council.

cleaning247 · 18/04/2020 19:32

Yes he would. As long as he has a business rates number.

iMatter · 18/04/2020 19:43

Yes. He will be eligible.

Lumene · 18/04/2020 21:26

Thanks Grumpy!

TARSCOUT · 18/04/2020 21:35

Absolutely and if you are in Scotland you will get your rates reference number at www.saa.gov.uk

Hi... just tagging onto this hoping someone could explain this to me in an idiot proof way 😂

I work from home, in my garden shed? Would I be eligible? And if not, why?

Thanks in advance

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/04/2020 17:20

If your garden shed is registered with your council for business rates and you have a full rebate then you get the grant.

If you have never declared it as business premises you don't get a grant.

summertimehere · 19/04/2020 17:25

@littleleeleanne do you pay business rates for your shed? Do you qualify for the small businesses rate scheme usually? If it’s a no then I don’t think you will be eligible

littleleeleanne · 19/04/2020 20:24

Hello, thanks for helping me!

So I'm registered as working from home yes. However, I've never even heard about business rates? 🤔 when does your business come to a point where you have to pay them?

Breathmiller · 19/04/2020 20:45

I rent premises for my business and get business rate relief. I just heard in Friday that my application was cleared. Should get it next week.
I'm not sure how it works with your own premises in your garden? Does anyone ever pay business rates on such premises? And therefore are eligible for the relief if it's small enough (which i presume it would be? )

Breathmiller · 19/04/2020 20:49

Sorry, that was meant to pp with premises in garden.

To the OP it does sound like your DH would be eligible

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/04/2020 21:28

@littleleeleanne

This isn't related to you working at home. This is purely about your premises being classified as and being registered with your local council as business premises and therefore liable to business rates. If they aren't registered (and if you don't know if they are, they almost certainly are not registered) you are not entitled to this grant.

littleleeleanne · 19/04/2020 21:34

Thank you for your time. I was pretty certain I wasn't able to get it, but find it difficult to read documentation when it's 'formal' I find it a lot easier to have things said in a normal way. Thank you again.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/04/2020 21:34

And the payment was based on being the person named on the business rates account for the premises at a fixed date in March. So you almist certainly won't be able to register retrospectively.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/04/2020 21:35

littleleeleanne

Happy to help - sorry that you're unlikely to be eligible for this.

littleleeleanne · 20/04/2020 10:45

It was just worth an ask, I haven't that long been in business so unable to claim the self employed back payment so it was just a thought to help us over these non working months 😊

confusedandtired99 · 20/04/2020 10:58

I’m still waiting for my grant

whatsleep · 20/04/2020 14:30

Place marking to check details given with my accountant. Working from a purpose built garden office but unsure if we pay business rates!
