Do you always lose smell/taste?

I've been ill for 4 weeks with what the GP is almost certain is moderately severe coronavirus. I've had antibiotics for secondary bacterial pneumonia and I had the high fever and cough and muscle aches. No sore throat or runny nose. There is no testing in my area except in ICU.

But now I'm recovering I'm worried that actually maybe it was flu, because I didn't ever lose taste/smell and neither did DH who had the temperature and cough for a week too. But it wasn't like any flu I've had before. I'm so run down if it wasn't coronavirus then I'm really scared of catching it. I'm also in the vulnerable list anyway for severe asthma.

Does anyone know if the loss of smell/taste always happens, or is it a 'sometimes happens'?

No.

It's one of the possible symptoms.

There is no symptom that occurs in 100% of cases.
