Herd immunity through catching the virus was never the plan

"Cynical" is a very charitable word to use

Eugenics by stealth by Covid and economic collapse. An unintended consequence of a surprise virus? Don't forget disaster capitalism is a thing, plus the corporate and political mantra of never letting a good crisis go to waste. Cynical ? You bet your sweet bippy I am.

"Our aim is to try and reduce the peak [of the infections], broaden the peak, not suppress it completely," Patrick Vallance, chief scientific advisor to the U.K. government, told BBC Radio 4's Today program on Friday. "Also, because the vast majority of people get a mild illness, to build up some kind of herd immunity so more people are immune to this disease and we reduce the transmission."

His justification for the achieving herd immunity was that most people get it mildly. Nothing to do with a vaccine.

What other choice realistically is there though ? Isn't it all about keeping numbers low so hospitals can cope . It will be very difficult to eradicate it world wide with just a few weeks lockdown surely .

There may not be another choice, but it's too soon to say that even at this point - never mind a month ago. For all we know, there could be a medical breakthrough just around the corner. Obviously the more time goes on and the more options we explore, the less likely that becomes, but why sacrifice hundreds of thousands of lives on the basis of such an early-stage assumption?

They should have quarantined people coming in from high-risk areas and tested, contact-traced and isolated any cases that made it through to the community.

Herd immunity was always their strategy though as they thought it was less restrictive and had least economic impact so would be best for their popularity ratings.

I thought article actually makes sense and explains why things were done when they were , I think they were aware no miracle cure was just around the corner
