Micheal Gove's daughter's test?

SouthWestmom · 13/04/2020 20:06

So, not about her health, wish her well etc. But it appears she had a test on the advice of Chris Whitty so Gove could continue isolating or return to work.
If this is true is this not a bit tone deaf as front line staff can't get tested and return?

Surely with the extended allowance for expenses to enable them all to work from home he could have stuck it out for two weeks and dialled in like the rest of us?

I didnt think you were criticising me... I just meant to make the point that this is a nationwide thing with family members of people in supposedly essential roles... as I said I'm not a tory and I hate Gove... but I do admit he is in an essential role.
And my husband is now working from home doing triage over the phone.. so it's not like hes completely unable to work... so just making the point that it is supposed to be a policy for ALL essential workers not just ones who cant work from home at all

BBCONEANDTWO · 13/04/2020 21:09

I think he'd be classed as a key worker so they would test his family in order to get him back to work sooner - that's what they're doing to NHS staff I think.

Fluffydogdog · 13/04/2020 21:11

CendrillonSings and he couldn’t recover in No 10 because...?

Michael Gove et al can work from home. Or they can afford to pay for these private tests that seem to be available for celebrities to buy.

The NHS hospital doctors I know cannot work from home and need to be tested and are not currently being tested in my area.

I don’t say this as a previous Tory basher. My shock is fresh.

SouthWestmom · 13/04/2020 21:11

It would be really helpful if they would publicise the testing criteria more. I'm going to try and find it.

Why can't Gove just stay at home for as long as possible?

Pleeease...

flowerycurtain · 13/04/2020 21:20

They run the country!! Of course it's ok to test them.

That doesn't mean nhs shouldn't get tested too but crikey someone has to run the show.

I wouldn't be a politician for live nor money. The vitriol they get on here is horrendous. What happened to #bekind?

toryandproud · 13/04/2020 21:20

lol wind your necks in... as usual Grin

SouthWestmom · 13/04/2020 21:26

Test them yes. Their families - why?

OP posts:
Krisskrosskiss · 13/04/2020 21:41

They test the household member so the worker can go back to work instead of isolating for 14 days... if they just test the worker the test might come back negative but the worker would still have to isolate because he could potentially catch it from the other household member... so they have to test anyone in the household with symptoms not the worker (unless they have symptoms)

SouthWestmom · 13/04/2020 21:46

I know that. My point was why couldn't Gove work from home for two weeks. When tests are still a contentious issue.

Not nhs workers, not nhs workers and their households, specifically an MP with a (along with all of them) recently announced expenses allowance to cover working from home.

If you were in his position, are you saying you wouldn't access your own child getting tested?

Krisskrosskiss · 13/04/2020 21:58

Because hes a front bencher of the current government.. it's pretty important he goes in to work.. if he didnt someone would have to stand in for him and its inconsistent... it's not good for the government it causes instability.. and right now the government needs to be functioning as well as it can.. in fact theres arguably never been more for the government to do during peace time as there is right now... I cant believe I'm saying this because I hate the tories and I wish it wasnt them in power... but sadly it is them in power, they are the government, and the least they can do is attempt to do the jobs they were elected to do if at all possible.... so I do think their family members should be tested if symptomatic, so that they dont disappear off for 14 days... imagine if all of them start isolating... how can you run the country? Government needs to function

SouthWestmom · 13/04/2020 21:58

That's what I'm trying to understand. Why is Gove so essential in person?

I can't speak for the whole country but in my area tests are available now for frontline healthcare workers and the people they live with. it's all about keeping them working. Was it the same a week ago? I just wondered as I know tests have increased in the last week.

SouthWestmom · 13/04/2020 22:00

They didn't all get tested though did they. We've had several off ill and I don't think all of them were tested. Carrie wasn't tested.

I can’t get upset about this he is a senior minister

Yes of course there should be more testing

CendrillonSings · 13/04/2020 22:13

Why is Gove so essential in person?

He’s a senior Cabinet minister. What exactly don’t you understand?

SouthWestmom · 13/04/2020 22:16

Well thank you for joining me in discussion I've enjoyed thinking about it.

However I'm going to leave it there (for me) as I can see this drifting away from the original point and I don't want to be assumed to be saying something I've not said.

OP posts:
lljkk · 13/04/2020 22:16

I thought private test only cost about £300? Gove can afford that.

SouthWestmom · 13/04/2020 22:19

Cendrillon i cross posted with you. As I said I'm leaving it there, two hours is long enough to think about Gove. However you keep missing my point which was why not wfh, why in person. Just asking me what I'm missing doesn't move that forward.

Anyway. Night all.

All Government ministers and their families who show symptoms should be tested. We already have the PM out of action. We need to make sure that proper plans are in place if others are hospitalised. It’s just common sense business continuity planning. Essential for the people that are running the country.
