With PCR You can detect shedding (identify viral material) when it's not actually infectious. I can't tell from the DM story what the ct value was or if it's been calibrated for what is actually possible to culture. On basis it's only 16 patients and culturing takes 7+days, I doubt the ct threshold is known.
