Help we are running out of hand sanitiser - where do you buy yours? I am not going to pay a tenner for 50ml bottle so please dont offer this. It breakes my heart that I bought my 3bottles of 200ml for 3quids 2months ago. Should have stocked up on it I know :(

OP there is no question that proper hand washing with soap and water is the best way to maintain the hand hygiene needed to help the spread of the virus. You will not find any scientific articles out there that say sanitiser is more effective than soap and water. Sanitiser is for where you don't have access to soap and water. Where you're out and about. So by all means use your sanitiser. But if you have access to a sink and (any old) soap, please wash your hands!

I think people need it much less now so many are at home most or all of the time. Hopefully it will come back in stock.

It's useful for certain circumstances OP but you are mistaken if you think it is better than handwashing. Effective handwashing is proven to be much better at the job.

Make sure it’s minimum 60% alcohol.
Have a look at Boots website for description because Cuticura for ex. Is measured by volume not weight (or the other way around?) but it’s good for the purpose.
You need to watch Boots website like a hawk or hope to find some on Amazon. Don’t just buy any obscure brand.
If doing online supermarket shop try and add hand sanitizer when available (very rarely).
Aim for the bigger bottles 200, 250, 300 ml etc. And decant as needed.
My local Boots store has a wide variety of small 50ml bottles and a few big bottles, they always come in stock. I haven’t looked in the local supermarkets but a neighbour said the nearest Morrison’s always has big bootle 300ml of hand gel.
It has been absolutely impossible to find any for such a long time but now it looks like the supply issue has got better.
I actually managed to get a multipack of bigger bottles from Amazon during the big shortage. After looking online nearly every day absolutely everywhere. It arrived the next day with Prime but sold out by the time I sent the link to a friend.
Some local independent newsagents have small bottles and also small Sainsbury’s, Tesco bring them in regularly but you need to keep looking.
Other countries don’t seem to have this problem according to friends of mine.
You just have to keep looking.

Home bargains round us had loads in last week. I have got mine from costco 4 x 100ml bottles for about £6.50 ish.

Branster · 25/05/2020 16:10

I would only use it when out and about, soap is better anyway.

As others have said just use soap and water, it's a virus not a bacterium (weren't we saying this back in March when everyone was panic buying it)

However, if you really really really need want it it's available at Arran Aromatics and Victoria Health.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 25/05/2020 16:12

You need the alcohol to kill the virus

No. You cannot "kill" something that is not actually alive.

Soap dissolves the cell walls of viruses and destroys them.

JamMakingWannaBe · 25/05/2020 16:17

I bought 50ml in Wilko for 49p recently and M&S had 500ml of 65% alcohol for £8.50 last week.

Branster · 25/05/2020 16:23

On the basis that Dettol (and other brands in different countries) destroys a particular type of Coronavirus (can’t remember which one) with no alcohol, Dettol will also destroy this one.
They also make hand sanitiser of a similar formula with whichever their main ingredient is. Some sort of amonia? No idea really.
So not, it isn’t just alcohol that disrupts the outer layer of the virus.
Soap and water is the best cleansing method.
But when out and about hand sanitiser of the right formula is very good.
They are called antibacterial ut they also work on some viruses.
