One household member is shielding but one is a key worker

And there are children off school in the household.

Does the shielded person have to literally stay in their own room for 12 weeks?

My friend is literally doing exactly this.

Ok, I thought that’s what it would be but just wanted to double check. Thank you.

What kind of key worker?

If they're a doctor I'd say that you need to follow the shielding rules as much as possible. Alternatively, could the key worker go and stay somewhere else?

My DH is shielding but we have a toddler so we've just put the house into lockdown.

If the key worker is say, a worker in a food factory, I'd suggest that they ask their employer to furlough them.

The shielding advice is almost impossible to follow with young children

Good luck!

Works in a supermarket but not on the shop floor.
