181 more deaths in UK

I can't work out how they decide when to release the daily UK death figures. Apparently the day before yesterday, when the figures were surprisingly low, the deaths for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. were taken, rather than a 24 hour period. I don't know why.

They then jumped to 113 which probably included some of those from the day before. Today they seem to have been released early and there are 181 more deaths.

Can anyone shed any light on this? It just seems to me that we should have a systematic approach so we are comparing like with like.

I think they upload the numbers as they get them from the separate countries of the UK. Early numbers yesterday didn't include England

Then used to report the number that died in the period from 9am yesterday to 9am today. Now they report deaths from 5pm two days ago to 5pm yesterday. So many are dying they had to push the time back. For one day they had to only report 9am to 5pm and the figure was low because it wasn’t many hours. Every figure since has been for 24 hours in the new time period. Hope that makes sense!

I have been quite confused with the numbers jumping about. That is an horrific rise.

excitedmumtobe87 thank you, I was confused and that was a great explanation.

Problem is, people don't die in 24 hour increments. So if a person died outside of a 24 hour window, it would be recorded in the next trope of reporting.

As a PP has said, reporting from areas will be at different times.

Now they've moved to measuring each day from 5pm to 5pm, the numbers are meant to come out around 2pm the following day rather than the evening of the same day. That's why we are now getting the figures earlier in the day.

So the numbers for the UK won't change now until tomorrow, is that right?

claracluck78 · 27/03/2020 16:54

So today's figures actually reflect the period from 5pm Weds to 5pm Thurs

That's right. The next 24 hour counting period has just closed, so they will now start collating those numbers for release tomorrow afternoon.
