Use of the phrase "The Clap.."

I do realise people wanted to support the NHS during this time of pandemic doom, it's just that seeing folks say "giving the NHS the clap", well... it's rather unfortunate because "the clap" is also slang for gonorrhoea.

All I’ve seen on Facebook is men commenting on pictures of female nurses things like ‘I’d definitely give her the clap’ and under posts/memes about the NHS and clapping for the NHS things like ‘I love giving nurses the clap’ and ‘send me a nurse and I’ll give her the clap’ etc. It’s really gross and definitely undermines their hard work and something nice the public were trying to do to show their appreciation.

Actually should’ve said social media there not Facebook because I’ve also seen it on IG, Twitter and reddit.

I did raise my eyebrows at it and could tell dickheads would have loads of shit 'jokes' about it.

Since these dickheads are essentially saying they have 'the clap' (you have to have it to give it), hopefully they wont have chance to have sex with anyone after this is over.

I was considering that folks didn't necessarily know what the slang was, but it seems people definitely know very well what it means.
