And it’s still early days for them

They are rapidly increasing in numbers

Please tell me they are on lockdown and have shut borders and stopped flights?!

They are now, but Trump has said he wants America back in business in two weeks. I hope somebody talks sense to that.

I just saw these numbers (not in the US or UK), and it is terrifying to me how quickly this thing spreads.

PigletJohn · 26/03/2020 21:14

I read the same story just now on FT.

It must mean they have obtained, and started using, a large number of test kits, which must be a good thing.

"US overtakes China for most confirmed coronavirus cases

The US has overtaken China to become the country with the largest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the world, with 81,943 Americans now testing positive for Covid-19.

State-by-state figures published late on Thursday showed confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US had overtaken the 81,285 cases reported by China, with the biggest outbreaks in New York, New Jersey and California. A total of 1,173 Americans have died from the rapidly-spreading virus."

Is their testing and reporting different from China?

FeckTheMagicDragon · 26/03/2020 21:42

I’m in the US, came from the UK. Ive been at home now for 2.5 weeks.
Getting tested is still difficult. I am in the vulnerable group (4 morbidities) had the symptoms but my Dr would not arrange a test until I could name someone that I had been in contact with that had already tested positive. Not quite a catch 22, but close.

I’m ok, it must have just been flu. But I have no way of knowing.

We are on state wide lockdown and my husband went into full on American Prepper mode back in early Jan. He went to fill up gasoline tanks today (for a just in case generator ) and said it was like 28 days later with just a few people out jogging or walking their dogs all well away from each other. A good few wearing masks. Normally it’s really busy.

Last week there were lots of local FB posts about no toilet paper, this week not so much.

Our state has had 8k people tested, 1k positive, 19 have died. We have 6 million people. There will be many more people who have it but we just do not know as they are still not testing properly. We are far better off than New York though! 2.5 weeks ago there were a handful of cases in the US, and one suspected in our state.

People are taking this seriously- even if the shower of shites in the Capital cannot get their act together (all of them, Senate, Representatives, Democrats, Republicans, Trump, Pelosi - the lot)

TrainspottingWelsh · 26/03/2020 21:42

Trump's a fucking moron, but a lockdown there is nothing like here. If healthcare is only really available to those in work, with a welfare state that makes universal credit appear heavenly, trying to sell the idea they should lockdown to a nation that was panic buying even more guns when Europe was stockpiling hand gel would be a really dick move.

We're doing it for the nhs, how would Trump sell it 'become destitute and die if you get ill from anything else to protect the health of rich old white men like me'. Even trump isn't that stupid. And credit where it's due, he hasn't yet tried to blame it on Mexicans.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 26/03/2020 21:45

Oh - funny thing. Gun sales have gone up, but shootings have gone way down as no one is out and about.
Also gun sales are mostly up for first time owners and in the most liberal anti gun ownership areas.

HerRoyalNotness · 26/03/2020 21:56

It’s too political here for people to step the fuck yo and make decisions. Our state governor left it up to the counties (judges and mayors) over lockdown. My county and the one next to it just issued stay at home orders yesterday. They dithered overnight about terminology, they didn’t want to use shelter in place as that’s what they use for an active shooter or hurricanes etc..

it’s a very disjointed way of doing things. There should be one strong, clear message from the federal government, but you know, politics.

SecretWitch · 26/03/2020 21:59

We had 10 deaths today and 2500 confirmed cases in my state. Trump is talking about wanting business to be back up by April 8. I think he is out of his fucking mind.

TrainspottingWelsh · 26/03/2020 22:04

I'm sure they have feck. I just don't fancy the chances of telling a heavily armed nation with nothing to lose that this will continue indefinitely. More so when/if it hits the more disillusioned struggling states.

Has Trump even mentioned any plan to support those that will lose their income, and therefore healthcare?

adiposegirl2 · 26/03/2020 22:39

Speaking of China, I do NOT believe their coronavirus infection and death rates.
