14 month old baby has cough and fever - covid?

My son has had a wet sounding cough on and off since the start of the year but yesterday it got worse and he has been coughing in his sleep. His temperature was fine during the day but as I was putting him to bed just now it was 38.4 and he’s now coughing in his sleep. His breathing seems to be ok but he’s no doubt going to be coughing a lot. I’m going to check on him every hour and I’m still bf so will offer that to him when he wakes/coughs a lot.

In the meantime is there anything else I should do? Is it even worth calling 111? I know they say in the news that children get only mild symptoms but they don’t specify what those are and this doesn’t seem mild to me. I’m so worried.

Hi OP, please try not to panic. It's very unlikely that your baby has corona virus, particularly if the cough is wet. If it IS corona virus, the risk of complications or severe illness is extremely low.

Have you been able to give your DS any Calpol before bed?

DizzyR · 25/03/2020 19:45

Thank you for your reply. I’m trying to stay calm but it’s hard not to let the worry take over. I gave him some calpol at about 7pm so hopefully it has started to work.

I thought that too about the wet cough but he had quite a raspy voice today and his cough is sounding a bit drier now so that’s getting me concern. He’s also had a runny nose today which doesn’t appear to be a symptom from what I’ve read so I’m really hoping it is nothing to worry about and he’ll be back to his usual self tomorrow.

Try not to worry OP - easier said than done, I know.

For COVID19, we are looking for a NEW cough. You said your DC has had a cough since the new year.

Also the cough is dry, not wet, no mucous, phlegm, etc

Runny nose is not a symptom.

I'd breathing is fine, I'd be confident this isn't COVID19

How is he now OP?

DizzyR · 29/03/2020 15:02

Thank you all for your messages @Skeeter2020 he is much better now but we had two more rough days and nights with fever reaching 39.5c. The fever came down with calpol and I pretty much stayed up all night checking on him every hour. He’s got a snotty nose and is still coughing but has his appetite back thank goodness!
