Hi Can anyone tell me if high blood pressure is a risk factor in having complications from corona virus.

Work are saying not and I have to go to work in a factory which refuses to shut despite being non essential. We have hundreds of people there.

My blood pressure is very unstable at the moment due to stress and im unable to see a doctor

Help!

I'm certain it is and it was listed specifically. My DM has very high blood pressure and has been completely self isolating for a while

Ah Brill thank you. I've got to speak to occupational health and I've put myself off but have to self cert.

Are you on medication which ends in -paril?

It may be wise to get a message to your GP but they may be doing changes to meds for hypertensives in the forthcoming days.

I wondered too as my dm has high blood pressure. She is on statins but dunno if that'll help against the corona :/

CendrillonSings · 25/03/2020 15:46

It absolutely is - unfortunately the statistics show that it raises the mortality rate to a similar level as other serious underlying conditions. Don’t put yourself at unnecessary risk.

ghostmous3 · 25/03/2020 16:21

Thank you again. Also I didnt know about the changes to hypertensive.

My gp has totally shut. No body answers the phones and well it's just scary.

I'm on amlodipine and ramapril .

I've put myself off now. Just have to self cert now

Work have told me unless I have a letter from the NHS saying I am at high risk then I M expected to be in work. I have told them that my blood pressure is unstable which it is, I'm having palpitations a lot but obviously cant see a doctor because there's none available to see

Having high blood pressure on its own has not been classed as vulnerable by the government. Around a quarter of the population have it which rises to about 2/3 of over 60’s.

Jury is out on whether blood pressure on its own has adverse affects

  • mortality is higher amongst and older population and older populations have higher blood pressure so may be a correlation not causation
  • most people with heart and pulmonary conditions that are more likely to die would have high blood pressure
  • there’s an unproven theory that ACE inhibitors and ARB’s could contribute to more severe infection.

If you don’t have a heart condition then you’ll be fine

The Ramapril might raise your risk of infection but the Amlodipine is what they suggest to mitigate that risk. I'm not a medic but looking at threads on here about it that seemed to be the case.
