Urgent- should I go home

Please help. I am 22 years old in a city away from home for work (2-3 hours away depending on whether I am picked up or use public transport).

Should my parents come and pick me up, I really want to be at home during this as we don't know how long this will last. Can they pick me up?

Or could I take the train to my home city and then take a black taxi?

Others may think differently, but I'd say it isn't essential. We've known this is coming, had time to prepare. My 18 year old DD was at home recovering from an operation. She did a 1300 mile round journey to get her stuff into store and back home where she wanted to be early last week. Sorry, I know it's so hard.

I’d say as long as your parents aren’t vulnerable, yes get them to drive and pick you up. There are other threads with people asking about picking up their young adult children and people saying yes, but do it ASAP

If you go, then go now, stop farting about. In fact you should have arranged to go yesterday. SIL has gone back to PIL, she was pretty much packed and ready, Fridge clear etc; and as soon as the announcement came she made the move.

Make sure you have everything you need as you won’t be able to make back and forth trips.

Go today as quickly as you can. Stay safe.

Go home. If your parents can collect you ask them to come today. Pack everything you need for the foreseeable future.

Get a lift. NHS workers are asking for people to avoid public transport where possible and you said your parents could come and collect you. Reduces the chances of you picking it up or spreading it.

You are an adult at work, presumably living permanently away from home.
Should you do non essential travel when lock down has been ordered.... sure, go to the beach too, maybe throw a party.

I do think people should be able to move once to get to the place they want to isolate at.

This is going to be three weeks at least, lots of people won’t have been at home last night, and their location might not be suitable for the long haul.

I am absolutely one for obeying the rules, but families should be together where possible.

If the latter, I think you should stay there. If we get this right, hopefully some of the restrictions can be lifted in 3 weeks.

I think you should get your parents to pick you up.

Talk to ypur parents. Presumably they're not in a vulnerable category and don't have any of your grandparents living with them?

Your parents need to answer this if you're relying on them for transport. Public transport is a bad idea.

If you’re going to go against lockdown advice to get home, at least don’t put people who might not have a choice about using public transport at risk. Get your parents to pick you up. Take everything you might need for 12 weeks.

That's the thinking that has led to droves of Londoners moving to their second homes in areas where local elderly people will now be denied hospital beds as a result. Want shouldn't come into it. People should stay at their primary residence, where they are registered to a GP.

If your parents can pick you up then that would be option 1 - make sure you are packed and ready to go ...

If they cant get you use public transport - it's still running .....but be mindful of your space and wear gloves that you can throw away ...

if you can self isolate when you get to your parents that's the best thing as you dont want to pass it to them.....

I must say although I imagine I'd want to pick DD up in that situation (she's still a teen) I lived in another country, on another continent, to my parents at 22, so I do think staying where you are is perfectly possible and more responsable.

What are your parents saying? I'd expect parents to be keener to get their adult kids "home" than adult offspring to get to the parental home, unless you're in unsuitable accommodation such as work provided temporary accommodation.

If you are going to be living with your parents anyway then it is no additional risk for them to come and get you (and tbh lower risk all round not to be on public transport) I would- get to where you need to be and then stay there 😊

You need to be incredibly careful not to infect them by going home.

How will you work if you’re there?

I really feel for you OP, it’s tough. This is what happened in Italy however. When the north went into lockdown, the young adults moved back to their parents’ homes in the south, taking CV with them.

My work are now saying I can't work from home
