How to get some help - coughing and vomiting blood

I’ve had a terrible cough for about 18 days now (16 of them extremely bad). Very little sleep each night and zero improvement.

Around day 10 I called my GP and couldn’t speak to anyone as if you had a cough they referred you to 111. Tried to call 111and after a time it rang off. Used the website and called surgery again and told to call 999. I felt bad but eventually did and they said seasonal flu.

The next night I coughed all night again and vomited blood. Not spotting or streaked phlegm, tissues covered in blood. Advice from previous paramedic was call back for blood. I called back, lungs totally clear but paramedic said in ordinary times he would take me to hospital but that he couldn’t. Since Thursday I have coughed blood predominantly but not exclusively every single night. Last night twice between 10-12 with all my food coming up too and twice between 4.45-5.30 once as a cough and once vomiting blood. Yesterday there was some in the day but not much.

I have pretty much vomited food everyday since the start.

I just don’t know what else I can do. I’m not a worrier but I’m now getting stressed and don’t think burdening the ambulance service again is going to be much help.

I was worried about you when I read your post. I've just done a quick Google (I am not in any medical preofession) and it does seem that this can happen. That said it must be alarming. Most importantly how is your breathing? Have you got someone with you at home?

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 24/03/2020 06:14

My breathing is fine, except when in a coughing fit and I’m not sure I will be able to catch a breath. I think more than anything it’s the no improvement in cough and persistence of the blood. I know a cough lasts a while, usually weeks for me but there is normally improvement along the way.

I think my current worry is there could be some underlying issue that I just can’t get seen about. I’m being dramatic but my brain is in overdrive thinking about cancer or similar.

Do you think the blood is coming from your stomach or lung op? Sometimes you say vomiting blood, sometimes coughing blood?

FedUpWithThisToday · 24/03/2020 06:31

I would call the go again and say you are coughing up blood. It's quite serious OP and someone needs to check you over

FedUpWithThisToday · 24/03/2020 06:31

Sorry- call the 'gp' again

Mumof1I · 24/03/2020 06:34

Please (as a medic!) Heading out the door you must have a face to face review today. Contact your GP practice for advice regarding this it maybe via 111/gp/a+e. This Is a red flag and requires assessment

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 24/03/2020 06:49

Thanks. I’ll call again.

This morning was one definite coughing of blood and the second bout was definitely vomiting. They were different.
