Sports Direct is staying open

Mike Ashley has emailed staff and said it’s an essential shop and they’re to come to work today. I wouldn’t normally wish anyone ill but I could nearly wish a dose of coronavirus on him.

But sadly I don’t think this will be the only business. Boris has said non food shops are to shut but loads of non retail businesses seem to think they have the green light to remain open. So I know someone who makes staircases whos off to the staircase factory tomorrow and will be mixing with dozens of others.

Are staircases essential? Will the U.K. crumble if we can’t make staircases for a few weeks?

I’m going to be pissed off if I’m abiding by the lockdown and 70% of people are still going to work as normal. Because it will lead to deaths and cause the lockdown to last longer.

Construction workers and others who can't work at home are to continue going to work.

Gingerkittykat · 24/03/2020 05:33

Sports Direct has never been known for their morals.

Hopefully trading standards will shut them down.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/03/2020 05:36

I can understand essential, emergency repair construction type work still going ahead. Or if someone had their kitchen ripped out yesterday fitting the new one so they’re not without a kitchen.

But we’re having a massive new housing estate built near us with loads of workers every day. Seems bonkers that’s still carrying on.

I really think everything needs to stop unless essential for life or we’ll still be locked down in six months.

So he is happy to risk the lives of his staff
Shame on you, Mike Ashley.
If everyone stays away from Sports Direct he wil have to close.

Derbygerbil · 24/03/2020 05:52

Shame on Mike Ashley... Really hope this is called out in the media

Lovelydovey · 24/03/2020 05:54

But can anyone go to Sports Direct? If not pointless keeping it open.

TheQueef · 24/03/2020 05:55

I thought I couldn't possibly dislike that man any more.
I was wrong.

Oysterbabe · 24/03/2020 05:58

But people won't be allowed to go there surely.

Theredjellybean · 24/03/2020 05:58

Apparently DIY shops classed as essential retailers.. I meant to buy paint last week to do decorating during this period.
Thought I'd missed out but looked this morning and they are closed today while they prep for changing to sell essentials only.. Then re opening.
I think though it sounds like they won't be open for people to go for a jolly wander round and plan a new kitchen for something to go.
I hope they limit it to trade or essentials only.. So you can get a new shower if yours breaks but you can't buy your bespoke farrow and ball paint.
I am disappointed but my decorating can wait.
How is sports shop selling discount tatt essential?

Metoyoutoo · 24/03/2020 06:05

He will be forced to close. It’s not essential

MashedSpud · 24/03/2020 06:08

DH works for a construction firm where the only need to finish this building is for bonuses in management and higher.

The amount of pressure he’s been under to come in (he’s been ill) is unbelievable.

It shows you that to some companies money means more than human life.

RogueV · 24/03/2020 06:08

He will indeed be forced to close. Why do these retailers think they can do whatever the fuck they want?

VivaLeBeaver · 24/03/2020 06:11

The daily mail are running a story on it already so I’m sure he will come under pressure and close. But I’m furious he thinks he has the right to put his staff at risk. He reckons it’s essential business as otherwise people can’t buy home fitness stuff. So he’s totally trying to argue the toss.

Aria20 · 24/03/2020 06:12

God he's such a twat isn't he?! Same as the weatherspoons man who said his pubs would remain open throughout! Until they were ordered to close. Dickheads!

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 24/03/2020 06:13

Some diy is essential, you may have to mend the toilet or do some basic plumbing fixes, so it’s a choice of going to hardware shop or trying to get a plumber in for fairly simple tasks and it is best not to have strangers in your house

bellinisurge · 24/03/2020 07:13

He'll get closed.

BigcatLittlecat · 24/03/2020 07:32

My husband works on a construction site of one of the major builders. There are no contractors on siteas of today. Actual employees have gone in this morning to close the site down but they don't think they will be there long!

AnduinsGirl · 24/03/2020 07:34

God, Mike Ashley is surely one of those universally loathed individuals. Literally nobody has a good word to say about him, especially up where I'm from. Literally zero need for his crappy shops to remain open at this time.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 24/03/2020 07:36

People can order home fitness stuff online. This is not essential groceries as announced last night

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 24/03/2020 07:36

It really highlights those in society who don't give a fuck. Mike Ashley has no regard for anyone's health and I won't shop there again. It's disgusting.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/03/2020 07:37

Michael Gove on the news now saying sports direct is not an essential service.

OP posts:
AuntieStella · 24/03/2020 07:38

When recommending where to get sports kit (many threads in 'exercise' over the years) I have always caveatted any mention of Sports Direct with 'if you don't mind the reported management practices'

The whole business model is that people will shop there, whatever the morals, as long as it's cheap enough.

Cremebrule · 24/03/2020 07:40

This makes me so angry. My husband works for a retailer that could have got away with staying open. They closed stores because they didn’t want to put employees at risk.

BelleSausage · 24/03/2020 07:40

What a tit.

WH SMITHs are also twats. No one needs sparkly pencils and lottery tickets right now.

SquirmOfEels · 24/03/2020 07:40

Sadiq Khan has also said Sports Direct should close its shops
