How are you cleaning shopping that's delivered?

We've just been talking about our food delivery which is coming tomorrow evening - can't wait as running quite low!

But, as we started to think through it, I 'm wondering what is the best way to make sure that we keep the virus out of the house? Thinking of wearing gloves to unpack. Washing hands and then wiping down everything with an antibac wipe before putting it away. Cleaning all surfaces and washing hands again. Does this sound nutty? What's everyone else doing?

I'm not being as fastidious as most of you. Hear me out - the virus can only be transferred if you touch the packaging and touch your mouth/eyes. So I've only wiped things where this could potentially happen eg bananas.

Anything in packaging, I'm removing the packaging, then washing my hands before using the contents.

I am very concerned about the virus, but I do think you are much more likely to pick it up through human contact, and I think the contact tracing carried out in China/S. Korea shows that.

I wipe down with weak bleach solution for perishables and put the non-perishables aside for 72 hours.

Of course, I have a spare room to put the non-perishables in.

If I go out to get food (as oppose to a delivery), my outside clothes and the shopping trolley go in the same room.

@Dongdingdong - I like to build a bit of 'fat' into the timings, just to be sure.

@TolpuddleFarter - Totally agree with you, and still I'd rather be overly cautious.

Can anyone tell me if my cats are a risk? They go out for several hours a day and night, (as cats do) and I’m now dreading every time they come in which is awful because I love their cuddles usually. I’m too scared to stroke them. I read an article yesterday saying you can’t get it from them but then read something on here about dogs and how it can be transferred via their fur, I presume it’s the same for cats then.

We’ve been isolating for weeks now except for food shop once per 4 days and have been ridiculously careful, I’m just so scared now that despite all this the cats could still bring it in.

Thank you everyone for all of your help - I am going to use the rubbing alcohol and washing up liquid, wash my hands between each stage and wash down the kitchen afterwards. For fresh fruit and veg I"m going to rinse them in warm water and hopefully the veg wash will arrive. I would rather be extra cautious too as it doesn't take too long and seems a sensible thing to do!

Patty - afraid I can't help with the cat - we have a dog and I hadn't thought about pets at all. It's funny how my mind seems to working very slowly through the different risks... I think I'll keep him in with us as we have two builders outside who like to pat him. I may wipe him down too!!

@peonies I’m with you on taking the extra time to wipe everything down, it’s definitely worth it for peace of mind.

Aww yes you could give your dog a wipe down, I must admit I had thought similar but it just seems so crazy! 🙈

Will wait for an expert.

You'll have a long wait on here.

I'm pleased to see we aren't the only nutters disinfecting our groceries. 😂We take the food into the garage (we live in a coach house so garage is right by the front door), spray non-perishable items with Dettol and leave them there for about 2-3 days. Perishables I have washed in the bath with washing up liquid and warm water. I feel like an absolute loon for doing this but it makes me feel a bit better I guess. 😁

We leave deliveries and post untouched for a few days too.
