Fucking hell, DD might be trapped in London

So, DD's uni have just emailed students telling them that if they clear out their accommodation by 11th April they won't have to pay rent for summer term. She came back home last week but has most of her stuff still there
Unfortunately, we aren't in a great position financially and the rent is about the same amount as she would have earned in her summer job at the uni.
She was getting ready to go down tonight on the train to pack up the rest in preparation for my DS and I going down in the morning to help her bring the stuff back in a taxi . dS would have to come as he's 12 and can't be left alone for that time .
We're 20 miles away
However, I'm now in a total panic at the prospect of an immediate lockdown in London .

Should we wait for the 8 30 address before she goes down?

What if she's stuck there, on her own unable to leave. At a push she could load the cab herself but will they allow her to get a cab out?

Will they let us in?

I appreciate nobody can really tell me what's happening but if anyone knows anything about the legal ramifications of lockdown advice would be welcome .

DD won't want to risk missing out on the rent rebate. She's got her coat on now . Shall I tell her to wait .
Will cabs even run out of London ?

I'm thinking we should all go down tonight. Just in case she has to get train back .

Thanks guys.

Yes, no car unfortunately. And I don't drive anyway.

Hmmm, I must say the idea of not going down is appealing but I hate the thought of her struggling on her own. We're not a family that travels lightly and she's basically got her whole life to pack up and load into a car. We'll see what tonight and tomorrow brings.

She's left now anyway. She'll have one more night in her lovely student room in Central London.

But thanks for the calming words. Exactly what mumsnet is good at and a reason why I've been here fourteen years.

We're in Hertfordshire.

That's shocking, sunshine. Although I believe you may yet get lucky as I believe the pressure on providers to release funds may be immense. is it uni accommodation? I think even private organisations linked to uni housing should be refunding. Certainly that's what's happened in our case.

I'm sure she will get back OK. Flowers

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 23/03/2020 19:49

I think for many drivers there is an assumption that everyone drives. Certainly I'm the only one in our road without a car. My twenty years in London spoilt me in terms of public transport.

I would suggest she goes now before the announcement. That way she’s already there and you all have a valid reason to travel.

Pomegranatemolasses · 23/03/2020 19:51

If she is on her own, she will be able to load far more stuff into a cab without you and DS taking up space!

Catsrus · 23/03/2020 19:51

I have two dcs inAustralia, one has lost job, the other on 1/2 salary, I'll have to sub both of them. We are in desperate times.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 23/03/2020 19:51

Thanks again to everyone who posted and took the time to reassure this frazzled old woman.

it wont be iminate she wont be trapped they'll allow people home

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 23/03/2020 19:56

Grumpy, yes that was our thinking too.

I wonder if I can phone the cab company and change the booking from an estate to a mini metro Grin what a shame there's no room for us.

Cats I'm sorry, that sucks so badly. Flowers to you and everyone else in desperate straits.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/03/2020 20:02

I wouldn’t change the cab. You have a booking. That’s the main thing.

UntamedWisteria · 23/03/2020 20:09

No-one will get trapped, they will give at least 48 hours notice

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 23/03/2020 20:27

Honestly if you're only 20 miles away, stop panicking for heaven's sake.

WhatHappenedThen · 23/03/2020 20:29

I’d leave your son behind if you possibly can. If he is 12 then tell him to play on the computer or watch movies. Obviously that’s not possible if there are other considerations but id leave a 12 year at home at the moment. It will give you more space.

Enko · 23/03/2020 20:44

We have a similar issue. 2 dds at uni both at home but both have items at their uni homes/halls. Unsure what to do now. At least mine are safely at home though.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 23/03/2020 20:50

Well, the thing is, now that no one can travel, it’s not like they can rent the rooms to anyone else. Honestly, I’d be getting your kids home (if you can within the rules) and not worrying about stuff. It’s only stuff.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 23/03/2020 21:24

OP are you ok?

wouldyouadamandeveit · 23/03/2020 22:14

The Police haven't even been briefed yet. The chances of them being able to call on resources and put things into action as of now are going to be limited.

We all need to keep a level head and be sensible as much as possible.

MyMagicStars · 24/03/2020 02:29

Hoping you sort everything soon x

BasiliskStare · 24/03/2020 17:57

My niece has got from university ( UK ) home to Japan - all safe and well & yes yes - plane booked - but things are possible - suspect some stuff may have been left Hope all well with you and yours @ Hoofwankingspangledcunt

BasiliskStare · 24/03/2020 18:16

I do not mean to say she was not being according to rules - just they brought her booking forward and she went home. She stayed at our house and all hand washing - not going out etc before she went for plane.

maxelly · 24/03/2020 18:59

Did your DD (and her yoga mat Grin ) get home OK OP?

Jourdain11 · 24/03/2020 20:03

Hope she got back okay!
