Worried about going to work in non essential job

I have work tomorrow. It's a receptionist job in at osteopathy clinic. I have to take peoples payments and answer the phones etc. The desk is small so there's about 1 metre between me and the patient when taking payment. I feel the clinic should be shut now as its technically a non essential practice and it involves very close contact with people. Am due in at 9am tomorrow and feeling panicked about it now. Theres only about 7 patients in during my shift but it could get busier if people book in.. I just feel it's quite irresponsible to still be open. I know others are still going to work in retail jobs etc but this is a small practice and I'm just worried about be so close to people. What would you do if you were me?!

Could you just self isolate and phone and tell them so?

Anychance123 · 22/03/2020 22:21

My mil is in the exact situation. Personally I would think of something to say not to go in, or just be honest about how unsafe you think it is. It drives me mad that companies are still putting staff in this position for a non essential job. How companies treat you now says a lot about them.

chocolateisavegetable · 22/03/2020 22:35

I'm in a similar position OP. I don't know who will look after my adult DD with disabilities if I get sick Sad

Divebar · 22/03/2020 22:37

Will people actually turn up though ?

SweetMarmalade · 22/03/2020 23:15

Same here, company still open, I can’t self isolate (even though I’m at moderate risk due to medication) so have to carry on!

clpsmum · 23/03/2020 07:30

@chocolateisavegetable tell them as a carer you need to self isolate to ensure you are health to look after your DD

Thanks for replies. I am worried as mum is asthmatic and live with her. @Anychance123 yes so true. It's such an uncertain time, I still want to keep my job :( but I think I will say today is my last day and I'm not coming in again. I cannot believe people are actually booking in for appts etc..then hearing them talk about their plans in the waiting room is making me so angry.. the hosps already at breaking point!

A bit dishonest but self isolate for 2 weeks and then when the two weeks are up work will probably be closed anyway.

MFran694 · 23/03/2020 09:11

I’m in exactly the same boat ! I am also a receptionist. We have closed down the sport massage treatments but still booking people in for the other treatment. I’m getting a bit worried now! We don’t even have gloves !! Confused

I’m the wife of someone being expected to continue as normal in a very high risk job during these times. Contractor for non essential home repairs and decorating. Last week he went into 20 different homes in different cities. Not provided with any health and safety equipment, hand sanitiser etc. Imagine how many door handles and services he is touching daily! It’s outrageous and quite frankly he doesn’t get paid enough in the first place. He doesn’t have the balls to say no to the work incase he gets fired. I’m due to give birth soon and if it carries on then I will be giving birth alone and DH won’t meet his child for some time. Selfish, pig ignorant employers are being exposed during this!

Insaneinthemembury · 23/03/2020 09:18

I'd say I had a cough and not go in... unless essential, all work should now be shut. Otherwise we can expect this to go on for a year, not months. Boris needs to lay the law down and fast.

Mojitomogul · 23/03/2020 14:38

Thank god. Weve just been told by our association to close for four weeks
. Relieved!

I work for civil service and all government offices are still running. I am in a non essential admin based office. Currently at home with symptoms Angry
