Being made to work in a very non essential role

Have NC to avoid the company I work for being recognised and will tweak a few details.....

I work for a large hotel chain, the hotel chain in question have shut down for the foreseeable, we have no guests in our premises at all. We shut down the hotel last night (cleaned each room that had been occupied, cancelled bookings, the kitchen cleared out their food stock so nothing will go out of date, deep cleaned etc). We have been told to carry on getting paid we have to still attend work and do duties that may not be related to our normal role. Tomorrow there is a team of us all going in to repaint the lobby, the next day we may be polishing all the lamps, you get my drift.

This is completely unnecessary work, many of the staff will be travelling in on public transport. Basically the company are going against all government advice of not travelling/attending work unless absolutely essential and encouraging working from home (which we won't be able to do). I totally disagree with the companies stance on this but what can I do? I don't fall into a vulnerable category so can't self isolate and if I did for 14 days claiming I had symptoms when I dont then if I did catch it what would I do then? I appreciate the company keeping us employed but I am beside myself about travelling on public transport and spending the day in a pretty confined space with other staff members. Any advice?

Tell your employer your concerns.
