Why didn't they just close the borders in the first place? It would have saved so much bother

Why didn't they just close the borders in the first place/put everyone returning to the UK in quarantine for 2 weeks. It would have saved so much fuss and bother.
Remember when that British Nurse came back with Ebola, they decided to nip it in the bud then and there. They didn't say to her 'Go home and infect your friends and family.................then 3 weeks later, when the virus has spread, we will do something about it and close all schools/pubs etc.
Instead they went out of their way to contain it.
I understand that China didn't give us much of a heads up, but even so.

I don't know. They should have quarantined anyone coming back from Italy or China. It's like we've sleep walked into this.
islandislandisland · 22/03/2020 19:51
I said this at the time, like many others I'm sure. If people flying in from Wuhan had to be quarantined, why were people allowed to return from Italy with zero checks- that's when it really escalated.
MerryDeath · 22/03/2020 19:58
actually china gave us quite a good heads up. this was reported early. we did nothing.
AvocadoPrime · 22/03/2020 19:58
I agree. Said this today when I was watch press conference. DP said they weren't to know but they knew. We've been getting warned since bloody december!
ilovecakeandwine · 22/03/2020 20:00
Said the same and it's no wonder people not taken it's seriously if those in authority haven't been as stringent as they should of been .
