I’m going to lose my job aren’t I?

Name changed incase I am wrong.

I started a new job on Monday. To be honest I was surprised to start at all but was assured that it was business as usual for them and they were going to try and continue as long as they could. This message was again reiterated in a staff meeting on Friday. The job is not in the essential worker list but quite a necessary service IYSWIM.

Today I have received a text to tell me to come to the offices at 1pm tomorrow. I was supposed to be in the office at 9am to complete some training (the position is a trainee for at least 3-4 weeks).

I am terrified that they are going to let me go and need a hand hold. I have been out of work for 6months and DP cannot work at the moment. I was so happy to get a job. Looking at the payments the government is offering in lieu of wages I don’t think I will qualify with only being there a week.

They could be pulling you in to say you'll have no work but be paid the 80%? That would be best case scenario I guess?

Sweatheart · 22/03/2020 14:24

You never know, my fingers are crossed for you

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 22/03/2020 14:26

Hard to tell. They may lay you off on 80% wages until things improve. If they needed you before, they will need you after.

Is it the kind of industry that will be massively affected by sales etc during this?

heebie · 22/03/2020 14:29

I don't think training can go ahead at the minute as it requires someone to be up close to you. I know they pulled training I was meant to have last week. I'll also keep my fingers crossed for you.

OutingMyself · 22/03/2020 14:31

I doubt they'd ask you to go in for that in the current circumstances. Why risk you going out for something they could say on the phone.

Takeagoodlook · 22/03/2020 14:33

Thank you!

I spoke to my Dad yesterday and he seems to think that the 80% wage guarantee will be based on February wages, obviously I wasn’t working for them then so really don’t know.

The owner (it’s only a really small Company) said on Friday that they still need to provide services and some of there customers are essential services. It’s just I am learning it all from scratch with no previous experience in the field I wonder if they are facing uncertainty it will be worth keeping me Sad

It might not be that. It could be tell everyone about what’s happening, what they expect, maybe to ask you to change roles slightly and to not except the standard training in these uncertain times. My fingers and toes are crossed for you.

Zena1973 · 22/03/2020 14:50

Its not based of February wages at all. Its back dated to March 1st so anyone laid off due to coronavirus can qualify as long as their company apply for the support. If you have a contract you should be OK. If you are told there is no work right now ask to be kept on the paye until we are through this then you will qualify for 80% of your weekly wage.
I feel for you as I only started my new role 2 weeks ago and due to lack of training as no staff unlike everyone else in my office I cannot work from home so essentially I have nothing to do....im waiting for the telephone call to tell me I have no role right now....i hope it all works out for you.
