Completely lost taste and smell

Hello!
I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct section to post on but any advice would be appreciated!

About 4pm today I completely lost sense of smell and taste. Very suddenly. The last thing I remember tasting was a cup of tea about 4pm and since then, absolutely nothing! I mentioned to my Dad that I couldn't smell anything (he said he could smell burning and I couldn't but that's a different matter haha) and then DH gave me a candle and I couldn't smell that either. We then tried with deep heat and I'm even sat drinking a wine now and absolutely nothing. Not a single sniff or taste at all!!! (Still drinking my wine, obvs...) it's like when you have a bad cold and lose sense of smell and taste except I haven't got a bad cold at all! No blocked nose either!
Anyway I've since been told it could be a new symptom of corona. I'm not unwell. I've had a persistent headache all day but that's it. However my worry is I work in a nursing home. I'm meant to be in tomorrow for a night shift but now I'm panicking I'm about to walk it into work?! How cautious is too cautious? It could (and probably is) nothing but working with the elderly is worrying me!

Any advice will be great, thank you!!

Hi,

I'm 27 and have had no taste or smell like absolute zero for 12 days now. It's driving me mad but same as you, only other symptom I have is a headache. Has your taste and smell returned yet? I'm worried it never will! :( x

Self isolate, please, and take care. You’ll be fine❤️

This is why we need many more tests including for home workers to be sure (if the tests work). Headache seems to be a common symptom too - my daughter had one for 2 weeks but no high temp or cough. I am not happy that our symptoms list is correct currently. it has also changed as it used just to be cough and temp but now they added respiratory issues. Lots of people who did not have cough and temp will have infected many others.

Day 11 for me today of no smell or taste...i really hope it dont last too long...it is horrible...

ScouseMar · 30/03/2020 20:15

Day 9 of absolutely no sense of smell or taste here.

Also been suffering from many other covid-19 symptoms too though. Hopefully on the road to recovery now though!

It's so odd, even with a heavy cold or flu I've been able to smell strong stuff like vicks or coffee.

Am actually starting to worry it won't come back at all Confused

Please do self isolate.

My friends both lost taste and smell with Coronavirus, now 2 weeks down the line and it’s back - they said it was worst for a few days in the middle, but it definitely comes back. Hope you feel better soon OP Flowers

ScouseMar · 30/03/2020 20:25

@chipsandgin thank you, that is reassuring.

Freshairimportanttoo · 30/03/2020 20:29

I'm day 6 of no smell or taste.

Very faintly returning.

Last Tuesday my nose went crazy, tingly v strange, I had clear white snot nothing else, strange taste, smell. Very super tired on Tuesday. I couldn't do a thing I was supposed to be wfh I had to crash out.

Felt v tired but OK on subsequent days.
Felt jittery some of days... Fuzzy head, staring into space...

Keep wondering if something more nasty will strike on the night...

I guess tomorrow maybe I maybe clear or maybe Wednesday?

Bobbiepin · 30/03/2020 20:41

@jitterbug5how are you feeling now? My taste and smell went a couple of days ago and now I'm a bit worried. I have asthma and have a history of lung problems.

toomuchlikemyusername · 30/03/2020 22:05

I today realised that I have had no sense of smell, and a diminishing (but not yet gone) sense of taste, for a couple of days. I've just been bashing up some fresh basil leaves, sniffing my essential oils and inhaling all kinds of aromas - not a thing!
I've got all the symptoms of what I would say is a 'normal' cold for me; headache, tired eyes, feel sluggish, pain in one side of my nose, a bit achey in my limbs, skin sensitive to touch in places. No sign of a temp or a persistent dry cough.
Having done some googling I'm about to email my work to say I'll now be self isolating.
Now I need to try to keep a lid on my anxiety and work out the best approach to distancing myself from my kids (lone parent) whilst not worrying them too much. Argh!

Hope everyone else is doing ok...

Mexico230519 · 30/03/2020 22:30

Thank you...hope we all get our smell and taste back soon...its bad enough self isolating without not enjoying food too...

Tempnamelady · 30/03/2020 22:37

I am at the tail end now, started 10 days ago been very unwell, and then had a secondary Bacterial infection which peaked Friday and I’m now on anti biotics After sore throat and breathlessness, my voice went hoarse ( which they were saying is another commonly reported symptom) . Smell and taste only went yesterday still not back today.

smofty84 · 30/03/2020 23:01

My loss of taste and smell lasted exactly 2 weeks to the day. No other symptoms bar a raging headache for one or two days but all back to normal now! Never felt "sick" or had any type of fever, I just an ability to taste or smell anything! A very strange sensation!

Mexico230519 · 31/03/2020 10:02

Thank you smofty84....sounds the same as i had...l look forward to tasting and smelling again x
