Forced meal 'invention' successes and fails

Who else is having to get creative with what was available on the shelves in supermarkets?

I had chicken and bacon already in the freezer, so fried that up with some garlic... then all I had to make a sauce was some cream. All good so far. Then remembered (obviously) I didn't have any pasta. Nothing in the fridge and all I had in the freezer was... a bag of broccoli.

I never realised how nice broccoli and cream is together! To me anyway Grin I never would have thought of it otherwise. Please note that I eat everything so if you find that gross you really don't want to meet me in person, it gets worse (see Spicy Foof thread earlier this month).

Haven't really had any fails yet, apart from maybe the mince I cooked as it was on it's use by, couldn't be bothered to make it 'into' anything so just shoved a spoonful or three on some buttered bread with some bbq sauce and ate a sloppy mince sandwich. It wasn't great. Always frustrating when half the sandwich makes a bid for freedom before it reaches your mouth.

I'm hoping others can inspire me with food combinations I haven't thought of, or at least give me a laugh with their failed experiments? Grin

DSs favourite meal (not because of corona virus, just because he's 3) is a jacket potato with a blob of ketchup, and peas and sweetcorn)

If you have it with lots of butter and cheese (and no ketchup) its pretty good.

That sounds tasty!
My worst one.... And this is personal pref as I hate red sauce with pasta... Pasta, carton of Passata and random freezer veg... Sprouts, spinach and mushroom s topped with a burger. It was not good

Bolognese sauce and brown rice really doesn’t work. I must get better at labelling things In the freezer Grin

Sparklfairy · 21/03/2020 09:32

@Spongeface the 'topped with a burger' just finished me off Grin All kinds of wrong!

@Camomila the jacket potato has just reminded me of my sister's fail years ago. She worked long hours in a shitty job with an even shittier commute. And lived with a flatmate who would contribute nothing to the food bill and ate all the food as she was home all day. One night my sister came in, tired and starving. Put a jacket potato on and reached for the butter. Flatmate had finished it and put it back in the fridge Angry In desperation, my sister fried an EGG, mashed it into the potato, and then added VINEGAR Grin I have no idea what she was thinking but she said it tasted so vile that she had to throw it out Grin

Just seen a trailer for Saturday Kitchen, which seems to be taking that theme today

Tune in later this morning for Sardine Bolognese!

Oh no, not a mince sandwich! Mince on toast however is delicious. Either if lazy, or if using up a last ladleful from the night before.

I've cooked terrible things in the past, but not so far this quarantine and I must have blocked them out.

Ricekrispie22 · 21/03/2020 09:54

Couldn’t get any spaghetti so I served bolognese with wholewheat noodles instead. It worked. Wouldn’t do it again out of choice though.

Ricekrispie22 · 21/03/2020 09:56

Also couldn’t get DD her favourite strawberry yogurts so got vanilla and tried to add strawberry nesquik but it failed.

My best mate still teases me about the "meal" I created from end of term leftovers at Uni.
There's a reason that Cheese Biryani has never become a takeaway favourite.
Bleurgh.

I made mince, loads of random veg with a cottage pie mix with water and topped with sliced potatoes and cheese! It was lovely

I saw this and thought I'd give it a go.

Had to use sardines in tomato sauce rather then his expensive mini sardines in oil. Henderson's instead of Worcestershire and no soy sauce. Tomato paste rather than tinned tomatoes AND Orzo rather than linguine Grin turned out quite tasty though.

Biggest problem - I made 4 servings and I live alone - I'm not sure if I should try to freeze it or just live off it for 4 days Grin
