Empty shelves. We swallow back disappointment of no bread, flour and garlic but there was no gin,of any kind left!
I panicked and bought 3bottles of wine though as there was sufficient for me not to be greedy.
How did we get to a gin shortage?Have people been bulk buying and I've just not noticed?
There were also lines by the checkout so that you had to load behind one and pack behind the other. We were gutted by the lack of gin but it appears other shoppers have been physical with the checkout people.
This is a medium sized Tesco in a fairy rural area.Sadly we are dependant on it as our town is still recovering from the floods .All the usual things went a few weeks ago but this is the first time the shelves and freezers have been this empty.

With pub closures I imagine booze will be the next thing bought up by selfish panic buyers.

RuggerHug · 20/03/2020 19:13

Distilleries here have started making hand sanitizer instead. Which is wonderful, but part of me did think 'well. I know someone who has a massive stash of whiskey I can get when this blows over and there's no new booze made'.

So someone with my warped thinking probably bought a lot with that fear WinkGrin

WTFdidwedo · 20/03/2020 19:14

I always have at least 3 bottles in my house to avoid this kind of dreadful situation Grin

Sexnotgender · 20/03/2020 19:14

Use amazon, or small companies. I got gin from amazon and wine from a small family business.

SidsWife · 20/03/2020 19:17

My local shops are full of people buying booze now the pubs are closing. Mayhem!

DystopianPanda · 20/03/2020 19:17

Bloody hell...first no tea and now no GinSad

AutumnLeavesSeptember · 20/03/2020 19:19

Synthetic quinine is being tested as a treatment so get some and get the tonic out!!!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 20/03/2020 19:19

You need to get yourselves online and start supporting small producers.

The wine merchant I use is offering 20% off at the moment.

Ginisatonic · 20/03/2020 19:21

We’re quite well stocked with gin but tonic is in very short supply here.

MissCalamity · 20/03/2020 19:25

Alcohol is going to be in short supply with the kids not being in school. Wink
I've started panic buying 2 bottles of wine on a Friday instead of 1. Wine

AllNewThings · 20/03/2020 19:26

My mad old Nana told me she'd bought a bottle of vodka to wash her hands with as she couldn't get hand wash. Grin

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 20/03/2020 19:27

I will be online soon,I never thought this day would come!I had imagined that if I got I'll I'd be convalescing with a glass of red in my hand or 2 meters from the fence in summer with white wine.

Our alcohol aisles have been ravaged. I just watched a man buy eight bottles of champagne. He may have a very good reason, of course, but it felt a bit surreal...

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 20/03/2020 19:29

Lots of tonic left, perhaps because there was no gin,may be I should panic buy that incase the gin comes back.

Never have I been so happy that dry January stopped me drinking the Christmas gin. Hooray, I am a true prepper.

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 20/03/2020 19:32

I have to be up early tomorrow to take my car to be fixed(quite a few local ones seemed closed). My exhaust we today and I sound like a boy racer. The chap at the garage did hint that parts were getting harder to find.Hope he has lots of tape.

I ordered gin on Amazon this week, it was delivered today. First glass drunk already 😁

MrsBennetsnerves · 20/03/2020 19:34

Some small producers are now offering deliveries. Microbreweries, craft beer shops and the like.

Smoothyloopy · 20/03/2020 19:35

I bought gin in the farm shop yesterday. Just having a glass

Doggyperson · 20/03/2020 19:38

Everywhere is selling out of vodka. I queued with just my two bottles in Sainsbury's behind a woman who only had a bottle of gin. Panic buying, Britain style!

AuntieMarys · 20/03/2020 19:39

I always have a minimum of 10 bottles of gin in my house.

Shamoo · 20/03/2020 19:43

It isn’t necessary that they are truly selling out, but they aren’t prioritising getting alcohol from depot to store because they need to focus on key food stuff. There will be more when all of the panic dies down (assuming it does)
