Economic impact and Londoners. Rant warning!

I keep reading in numerous threads about the greed of the government and greedy businesses still running, like gyms and restaurants.

Do people really not understand that the recession cost many many people their lives? Through cut benefits, reduced social care, low NHS funding. The government (which I certainly didn't vote for) has a responsibility to try and ensure that a recession is also avoided. It isn't greed, it is common sense and long term thinking. And a very complicated mode to work through.

Also, when you are asking Londoners to stay in London and not come to your village please remember that London subsidises massively all the services that are available throughout the country. Londoners will feel the brunt of the effects of the virus. So be a bit more measured in you responses. And rant over!

It does but that doesn’t mean we’re entitled to head to Cornwall or North Wales or wherever and use their already creaking health services! People are worried and we in London are no more important than anyone else.

I agree with the rest of your post though - I don’t think restaurants etc are being greedy, they’re scared as well. The government has a responsibility to try and ensure that the inevitable recession is as painless as possible.

slipperywhensparticus · 19/03/2020 10:28

You have enough hospitals in London to cater for you please stay there because we dont have as many as you

And are you fuck subsidising the test of the country Hmm

Wetcarparkrain · 19/03/2020 10:32

I’m sure you’re about to get slated, but I was just thinking that this morning. I lived in London for years in a small cramped flat, bad air, fewer natural resources. I now live in a spectacularly beautiful area that is heavily, heavily subsidised.

I do get why people don’t want it imported to them, but the message of ‘stay stuck up in your fetid, overcrowded city in your tiny flats and keep on generating those tax revenues just so you don’t infect poor old ME walking the dog along the cliffs/beach/moors/area of healthful fresh air and outstanding natural beauty’ is a bit inappropriate.

Dogsandbabies · 19/03/2020 10:37

I am absolutely not suggesting anyone should leave. It is irresponsible to do so! I am certainly staying here. I am asking you are not so rude!

On the subsiding see here: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/business/2017/may/23/uk-budget-deficit-grows-to-more-than-10bn-as-people-spend-less

London is at the epicenter of this virus in the UK If people leave London to travel to more remote areas, they will inevitably extend the spread of the virus. This is precisely what happened in Italy. Furthermore, an exodus of this nature will put intolerable pressure on supermarkets, pharmacies and the NHS in more rural areas. That is profoundly selfish behaviour. And it is in direct conflict with government advice. Yet you seem to be justifying this behaviour.

rowyaboat · 19/03/2020 10:44

Well how do you think China are coping?

Dogsandbabies · 19/03/2020 10:49

@BovaryX I suggest you reread my post. I am not suggesting or justifying people leaving London. I am asking for less rudeness. People are just scared.

BovaryX · 19/03/2020 10:55

I don't think it's remotely rude to be concerned about the idea of an exodus from the epicenter of the virus to less equipped rural areas.

Absentwomen · 19/03/2020 10:57

I think avoiding the recession is past. The pound has tanked.

Dogsandbabies · 19/03/2020 10:59

Of course not. But many posters have not been nice and instead are sarcastic and horrible. Which is where my post originated.

Whilst financially London may be subsidising much of the rest of the country I'm pretty sure that it's the rest of the country that are providing London with food (and toilet rolls). And it's the behaviour of some people in London that is going to cause a lockdown in the rest of the country.

Waspnest · 19/03/2020 11:05

And I wouldn't worry, people seem to be being nasty about everyone and everything on here at the moment. Bizarrely Facebook seems far nicer and supportive maybe because it's less anonymous.

Cornettoninja · 19/03/2020 11:16

London is not an independent nation.

Don’t start down the route of who gets what based on what they contribute to the country. You can’t put a tenner in your morning coffee or fry fivers for breakfast.

Valkadin · 19/03/2020 11:26

I left London many years ago because I hated hated living there. I’m up North now. I know it’s the epicentre of England but so many Londoners need to get over themselves. My Mother had an attitude like that, it was embarrassing.

hellsbells99 · 19/03/2020 11:27

I do think people with holiday caravans and homes though may want to ‘evacuate’ their families there if someone in the household is a frontline NHS worker. And I can understand that response. E.g. if one of them is a doctor, then they stay in the main house whilst everyone else moves out. It is 1 way of helping NHS workers stay working whilst also protecting their family.
(This is not the case in my family by the way so don’t have a go at me).

THIS.

@Valkadin

All you have just done is prove my point. Just rude. And nice way to talk about your mother!

I don't think I am more deserving in any way but Londoners are also not the plague of the UK.

@Waspnest

Thanks! I completely agree.

A quick google shows me that corona virus is seeded across the whole country. More cases in the southeast, but also more people. www.thesun.co.uk/news/10801702/coronavirus-uk-tracker-cases-map-latest/

We are in this together, like it or not.

Cornettoninja · 19/03/2020 12:45

@Dogsandbabies the fact is currently London has 900+ Confirmed cases of covid where as no where else has tipped into triple figures.

The economy isn’t a good enough reason to delay isolation.
