It's September 1940 - AIBU to ignore the blackout regulations?

I can't really see what all the fuss is about. I'm very busy, and it's such a performance to put up the blackout blinds every night. I can't believe the Luftwaffe will really be able to spot our town just from my table lamp glinting through the gap in the curtains, but when I said that to my neighbour she went mad. AIBU?

I would say it's fine - Joseph chamberlain was recorded prior to his death (very inconvenient for my post of him to die before 1940!) saying he isn't going to follow any restrictions either

JackiFazaki · 18/03/2020 22:15

Fgs this is nothing like the war. For a start your life isn’t likely at risk, you’re not going to be conscripted to fight for your country or have your kids sent abroad on a ship.

  1. Life limiting illness here, so my life is at risk.
  2. Emergency Services front line family, son's just in from work and hasn't had a day off in 2 weeks, as several colleagues are ill.
  3. So no permission from you needed thanks, to have a bit of a smile and a distract.

Now put that light out.

[During WW2 the government introduced draconian measures to control the the economy and to impose safety measures for the benefit of the whole population. They clamped down on hard on people who broke the rules. Consequently most people obeyed the rules, the population didn't starve and eventually the Allies won the war. There are always idiots who won't obey rules unless they're forced to. We're seeing a lot of them at the moment.]

Around 450,000 British people died in WW2 which is quite close to the number predicted to die if the disease is not contained.

I would rather die as a free born woman

Amazing..l wonder whose bed she will take in intensive care with her selfish actions?

Wolfiefan · 18/03/2020 22:23

Is a “free born woman” something you have to identify as? Or am I already?
Or would it be on my birth certificate?
Should I ask my mum?
Confused

Is the joke here that people who aren’t taking this virus seriously are as stupid as people who didn’t take the blackout seriously, OR that people who are taking this virus way too seriously actually think it’s as bad as the blitz?! Genuinely can’t tell 🤔😂

Wannabangbang · 18/03/2020 22:38

Completely ignorant and this is why they need full lockdown now. People like this

TwelveIslands · 18/03/2020 22:39

It'll be over by Christmas. What's the fuss. Be a nice holiday in France for the lads. We'll show them!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/03/2020 22:42

For me, it's the former, Avon.

OP posts:
JackiFazaki · 18/03/2020 22:49

RainbowMum11 · 18/03/2020 22:55

mumwon · 18/03/2020 22:59

regarding being a freeborn woman - but are you a ciswoman (lets mix metaphors here)
as stated on another thread
dh & I did a stock take on cupboards - it entertained us for quite a few hours - we are going to do the freezer next (2 years worth of rhubarb in there - only I like it so goodness knows what I will do with it - shh! is there a black market in rhubarb does anybody want to it for paracetamols?)

Yes a state of war has been declared and this automatically gives the government the right to impose laws restricting all kinds of activities and dictating punishments without due political process. The blackout was enforced by these laws.

The equivalent in peace time is a declaration of a state of emergency- this may be imminant as I believe - but may be wrong - that it is required to stop free movement - ie a legally enforced lockdown as opposed to the suggested actions which we have had so far.

War time is very different to peace time.
