So should she get food or not?

DD came back from abroad, straight into self isolating, did not pass go, just went straight home.
Day 5 and supplies are running low! She lives a long way from me, housemates useless and one has helped but that's all.
Should she put a scarf over her face, scrub up and pop to shop or not?

Yes -dont be an idiot she needs food- YANBU
NO!! -dont be an idiot, she will survive- YABU

dontgobaconmyheart very judgemental. Who knows why the OP's DD was abroad but she may have been for all manner of reasons. Language students spend a year abroad. So do lots of placement students. They may have been out there since September, way before this started. Who knows. That is not the point here. The point is what does she do if she HAS NO FOOD AND NO ONE IS WILLING TO HELP HER. You seem to be suggesting that this is all her fault therefore she deserves to starve to death Hmm

TheNanny23 · 18/03/2020 17:53

Official WHO advice that if you go to get food you should cover your mouth eg surgical mask and wash hands. It’s not ideal and she should explore most other options- even if it’s takeaway from two weeks. Although where was she abroad and is she symptomatic?

KatherineJaneway · 18/03/2020 17:57

She has options:

• Call out to friends and family on Facebook for help
• Join her local Facebook group and ask for help
• Join nextdoor.com and see if someone local will help
• Join covidmutualaid.org/ and see if someone local will help
• Call local shops and see if any will deliver
• Looks at Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat etc. Expensive but Deliveroo now do contactless deliveries.

damnthatanxiety · 18/03/2020 18:18

Everyone suggesting delivery food - how long could an average working person afford to live off takeaways let alone a student?

No one is saying eat takeaway everyday but they have some good deals at times and, if careful, you could make a takeaway last a few meals. It's about thinking strategically.

Flusteredcustard · 18/03/2020 18:27

our local facebook groups and next door have been full of people offering to run errands, hope she manages to find a kind person

HollowTalk · 18/03/2020 18:28

But the person delivering the food might be infected!

Sceptre86 · 18/03/2020 18:31

Am I missing something? Why can she not order from a supermarket? Unless you are in a vulnerable group I would be going to my child to drop off food.

bloodywhitecat · 18/03/2020 18:34

A scarf over her face will be as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/03/2020 18:34

@Sceptre86 have you seen how long the wait is for a delivery slot is from a supermarket? It's weeks!

Some are not allowing new customers to register for deliveries so if she hasn't ordered from them before, she may not be able to at all!

carriebreadshaw · 18/03/2020 18:37

Roughly where is she?

arethereanyleftatall · 18/03/2020 18:51

'Why can she not order from a supermarket?'
Lmao. They're full. No slots whatsoever. How can you have missed that?

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 18/03/2020 18:54

In my area, there is Mutual Aid. I've signed up to help people self-isolating locally. I'm sure there will be something like that near her.

Reallynowdear · 18/03/2020 20:08

Where did she fly back from?

Does she have any symptoms?

audweb · 18/03/2020 20:23

My city does deliveries from local shops so I could order the basics in - does she live in a place where there are apps for that? We have few and I’m not even in a big city. Then maybe a takeaway to supplement. Most delivery places are just leaving it at the door if instructed but will phone you when they drop it off and check someone has taken it inside. And you can pay online not cash.

Sceptre86 · 18/03/2020 20:26

It must just be where we live but I can get an asda order or morrisons for the beginning of next week. Obviously not so helpful if you are completely short though.

SamSeabornforPresident · 18/03/2020 20:33

Tesco local to me has delivery slots from tomorrow. I got one no bother. Sod all food, mind you. I am very close to a major city though.

Musereader · 18/03/2020 20:40

Amazon prime do amazon now, even now they have delivery slots for next day for me. Obvs depends where she is but most places have it

Pamalarrrr · 19/03/2020 08:59

Thank you all for your really helpful suggestions. Much appreciated! She is sorted now. She only told me yesterday bless her, didnt want to worry me. Now I will worry more in future that she doesnt tell me!!
Hope everyone's day isnt too stressful x

There is no guidance (that I can find- feel free to post a link!) that says you have to self isolate if you've come back from another country. Just if you've got symptoms and that applies whether you've travelled elsewhere or not

Scarlettpixie · 19/03/2020 10:35

In my area there are people offering to help on local Facebook groups including a dedicated area Covid 19 group. Local pages are also giving details of business now offering delivery who don’t usually. These include green grocers, pubs, cafes, local shops and delis. There must be someone.

Jaxhog · 19/03/2020 10:50

Note - not everyone can get deliveries from Deliveroo or Uber eats. We can't. And we're in the SE in a small town, so not the middle of nowhere.

I'd suggest she asks a neighbour or friend to go. I'm sure someone will help.

forrestgreen · 19/03/2020 10:54

Our Facebook groups has local shops offering to do free deliveries. Hope she's ok

Khione · 19/03/2020 12:42

Even where delivery slots are full, many places have 'click and collect', which won't entail contact with anyone.
