Sadiq Khan should not be cutting tube trains

Sadiq Khan will be reducing weekday tube trains to weekend frequency due to CV, according to ITV news. The tube is still busy and by cutting the number of trains, it’s going to make the carriages that are running even more crowded for those of us unfortunate enough to use them. It would be far better to keep the usual number of trains running and make conditions less crowded and therefore less dangerous for passengers. Surely that is obvious?

Well, when you can stop Tube staff going sick or needing to isolate, then perhaps they will.

Today there are delays/serious delays to a few lines because of ‘operating difficulties’ (usually code for insufficient staff)

I suppose it’s a case of whether passengers prefer Saturday service which is running fairly well, or erratic service on fuller timetable. Especially as overall passenger numbers are down a considerable amount

GenevaMaybe · 18/03/2020 07:15

The tube should be stopped all together. It is very high risk for contagion

Drivers, ticket sellers, those people in high vis who answer questions and open the gates when your ticket doesn’t work, station cleaners, the people sitting in front of computers in those dark rooms controlling the traffic on the lines.

All those people are just as likely as the rest of us to be off sick, or self-isolating for 14 days at a time when they or anybody in their household show symptoms.

It’s not realistic, or safe, to run that kind of service with insufficient staff.

If the Tube is still busy I’m worried! It must be a hotbed of transmission!

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 18/03/2020 07:17

Unfortunately many key workers (doctors etc) rely on the tube to get to work so I imagine they'll keep it running as long as they can!

LittleLittleLittle · 18/03/2020 07:20

The Mayor said public transport is going to continue to run so key workers can get to work. The timetable is cut back because of sick staff and the fact that it costs more of money to run empty tubes and buses.

To be fair the last time I took buses over 2 days, which was two weeks ago, the service was clearly cut even though TFL pretended it wasn't.

Well, when you can stop Tube staff going sick or needing to isolate, then perhaps they will.

According to ITV it’s due to passenger numbers - there’s no mention of staff self isolating or being off sick. So like I said, cramming passengers who do still need to use the tube into fewer carriages isn’t a very clever move.

But then again this is the man who said a few weeks ago that there’s no risk in taking public transport in London Hmm

I think the UK response and action plan is dangerous and irresponsible, including keeping the goddamn tube open.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 18/03/2020 07:41

What ? How is he supposed to run tubes when a large % of people are self isolating ????

Think OP , are your needs more important

Thisisworsethananticpated · 18/03/2020 07:43

The tube should be stopped all together. It is very high risk for contagion

And how are supermarkets staff , petrol garage staff , carers , pharmacists, power generation staff and most critically NHS staff supposed to get to work ?

We use taxis like Xmas day , and then the risk is transferred to another place

If people who can self isolate this isn’t a problem but we can’t have our cake and eat it

Dongdingdong · 20/03/2020 21:49

Well that was predictable...

@Thisisworsethananticpated and how do you propose key workers get to er, work? Think about it.

Erm that’s what i said Confused

alexdgr8 · 21/03/2020 00:03

i think we need ome lateral thinking in all this.
maybe taxi drivers could be subsidised by the govt to take nhs and key workers.
that would keep the drivers working, give then an income.
also close tube to cut down on contagion, and deter people from going about for no good reason.
or perhaps the army could be used to run extra special buses for key workers, direct to their workplace from central points.
