Someone on Craicnet commented that he spoke as a doctor, not a politician and I think that is true. (He is a GP)

I was very impressed by his speech, he spoke the truth. We do not know what is ahead of us, we need to stick together to support ALL our citizens. It is the "calm before the storm" stay safe everyone x

Designerenvy · 18/03/2020 01:13

Very proud of him tonight .

sessell · 18/03/2020 01:41

The kind of leadership we desperately need in the UK.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 18/03/2020 01:45

I love a bit of Leo- he often appears to be the only grown up in the room, specifically to do with brexit.

I’ll be sad when he leaves office, he’s played a blinder with this so far. Just a pity he couldn’t do the same with the housing and trolley crises.

Mymymycorona · 18/03/2020 01:47

I love Leo and he was more GP/human than politician for sure. I have infinitely more faith in him than Boris.

echt · 18/03/2020 01:57

Top speech. He spoke like a human being.

👏

DramaAlpaca · 18/03/2020 02:01

That speech was great. Makes me glad I now live in Ireland, not the UK where I'm originally from. The government here seem to have much more of a handle on things than Boris & Co. The message here is very clear and the UK government could learn a lot from it.

Cokezeroisyummy · 18/03/2020 07:09

I think it was a great speech, very truthful yet reassuring. I wish the election had gone differently and leo could stay on as taoiseach.

Pinkpeone1 · 18/03/2020 07:14

He did a great job I thought and just highlighted how Boris lacks true leadership skills.

Mayorquimby2 · 18/03/2020 07:24

The sinners have gone awfully quiet during this crisis.

BubblyWater · 18/03/2020 07:25

Superb, well played Leo. Truly reassuring

chomalungma · 18/03/2020 07:27

It's a great speech.

Stickybeaksid · 18/03/2020 07:28

It made me very teary watching it. I thought he did a great job. Calm and reassuring in a crisis. I fully believe the action he is taking is the right one. If ever a country could pull together and beat this, it’s Ireland.

LellyMcKelly · 18/03/2020 07:32

Phenomenal speech. That’s what leadership looks like.

evilharpy · 18/03/2020 07:34

It made me cry, and it very much made me want to pack my bags and move home immediately. It felt completely honest, no political spin or agenda.

HattieMid2 · 18/03/2020 07:37

I grew up in Ireland and my Mum still lives there, along with my younger brother and all of my best friends and their families.
My mum has lung cancer a few years back and now has COPD - I am so grateful for the calm, rational leadership he is showing.

I'm in London and thankfully able to self isolate now - I don't trust Boris' approach one bit.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 18/03/2020 07:38

I thought his speech was honest and reassuring . It’s such a difficult time for the whole world right now and we really all need to pull together to keep everyone safe.
I’m so worried for the uk, I have close family there and it’s such a worry .

Aspoonfullofjam · 18/03/2020 07:39

Great speech. I love Leo too.

Aspoonfullofjam · 18/03/2020 07:41

And I think he’s looked so nervous during these speeches. It must be a serious strain making all these huge decisions.

Article in the Irish times today is reassuring that we’re doing as much as we can. Hopefully all the new testing centres open will make a difference and that people will keep putting themselves forward to be tested.

Feel very reassured by Leo's speech last night. I feel the government are doing everything they can to prepare us for the awful times that are just around the corner. They have organised emergency social welfare for the newly unemployed , revenue payments due in by businesses can be delayed without interest charges. Property tax due to be paid this month is deferred. Great feeling of solidarity. My sister and her family live in London. I feel so worried for them.

eaglejulesk · 18/03/2020 07:59

That was a great speech, very reassuring and calm. It seems Ireland is in good hands.

Nogodsnomasters · 18/03/2020 08:05

That speech was so reassuring and calming, have never felt that way about a political speech in my life. I'm in Northern Ireland and wish we were following the Republic of Ireland's approach.

Runssometimes · 18/03/2020 08:05

Very proud to be Irish. I know he’s not popular in Ireland but I think he nailed this. His appeal to young people, talking about mental health, the appreciation of everyone, including truck drivers, I think it was very well judged and inclusive.

switswoo81 · 18/03/2020 08:08

Great speech. I much prefer the term cocooning for my 81 year old nanny than isolation and calling them.societies most precious. It implies (rightly so) that we as a people will mind our elderly.
