One year old had jabs yesterday - now has a fever

One year old had the hib/menC and PCV jabs yesterday morning, then started with a high temperature around 11pm I think. Hib/menC NHS page lists fever as a very common reaction. Nurse also said he may get a temperature from it.

Temperature was normal this morning but back up (though not as high) today. No cough or other symtoms aside from the semi permanent snotty nose.

It seems very very likely that the temperature is from the jabs, but I kept us home today and am wondering if I should continue to isolate for the 14 days on what would seem to be the very slim chance it's not the jab causing the temperature. I want to do the right thing but am also minded to try and stay rational and proportional and perhaps I am being overly cautious.

What would you do?

I would keep em home purely because they probably feel like shit. As you say, its most likely the jabs.

pisspants · 17/03/2020 20:32

similar situation with an older child. Not taking any risks and we are all self isolating.

Faceache25 · 18/03/2020 07:21

Interesting others in same situation! I spoke to the nurse that did the jabs yesterday and she said no needed to isolate, but I'm just not 100% sure. Will try and speak with the GP this morning.

I would self isolate for now and see how he is in a couple of days. It’s a difficult one.

Selfsettling3 · 18/03/2020 07:28

You have to self isolate I’m afraid.

My son had a temp of 39 for 4.5 days after this set of jabs 15 years ago:-(

LASH38 · 18/03/2020 11:17

My child is due the second set next week and I really don’t know whether to get it or postphone as if he gets a fever how do I know it’s definitely due to jab?

Sexnotgender · 18/03/2020 11:19

Very difficult. These vaccinations will give an on and off temperature for the next 3/4 weeks in my experience.
DS had his in February and was a disaster with them.
We should all be social distancing anyway.

AnotherMurkyDay · 18/03/2020 11:25

Mine all had temperature for 2-3 days after those. I would keep him home while he had a temp because getting Coronavirus on top would make him more poorly, but also follow the nurses advice and not do the 14 days.

LASH38 · 18/03/2020 12:34

Thank you.

We are already in isolation - I‘ve not yet returned from mat leave.

On off fever concerns me in case I miss something. I’m in a high measles area too.

My LO had his jabs on Monday and he is still having high temperature now too. Been giving him plenty of Calpol and spoken to GP over the phone. Have you given ibuprofen yet? Not sure what to do either!!

Kifi · 19/03/2020 13:59

@LASH38 How's your baba doing now? Ours is still not well and has to see GP today :(

Lynda07 · 19/03/2020 14:07

It's quite normal after jabs, honestly. He'll probably be back to normal tomorrow.

LASH38 · 19/03/2020 17:22

@Kifi how is he?

My lad’s appointment is next week. I still don’t know what to do.

Birdyfly · 19/03/2020 17:27

Oh dear... Mine has theirs next week too

LASH38 · 20/03/2020 10:34

How are the babies?

We’ve decided to give it to him. We have high rates of measles in our area anyway (anti-vaxxers) and after speaking to a few HCP we weighed up the disadvantages and feel that measles might be more deadly for him than CV is he got it.

My GP is on lock down anyhow.

I’m praying he doesn’t get a fever/reaction due to the fear.

Kifi · 20/03/2020 12:15

@LASH38 we’ve ended up in a&e after seeing the GP yesterday. GP advised we bring him after he started vomiting and not being able to hold down fluids and no wet nappy for 12 hrs. He said our baby had a red throat and ear. A&E treating us as a CV case and we are in an isolation room. The staff I have seen seem to think it could be a reaction to the jabs plus tonsillitis.

One thing I would say is always trust your instinct, and our little one had a cough / runny nose since Jan so I probably should have waited until he was completely free of his cold until he had his jabs but hindsight hey...hope all is okay for you.

@Faceache25 any news on your situation as the situ is quite similar?!

LASH38 · 20/03/2020 23:36

Oh no. Poor little thing. I hope he gets better soon and that you are looking after yourself.

Our appointment is Tuesday. I think I’ll call the docs again...

@Faceache25 my son had his just over a week ago he had a temperature that same night then now a week later he's got one again! We've decided to self isolate purely down to the fact I don't want him catching anything on top of this reaction (to what I think is a reaction to the vaccinations) and just in case it is something else.

He's also vomited a couple of times and is just very sleepy, has anyone else experienced this? He's been having wet nappies and is drinking fluids but doesn't stop me worrying!

Hope everyone's little ones are okay.

Faceache25 · 22/03/2020 09:44

Hello everyone, sorry I didn't come back sooner.

I spoke to the nurse again that day and she reiterated that it was the jabs, and that we didn't need to isolate. She also checked this with the GP. I isolated us anyway for a day, I had decided that if the temperature stayed for more than 24 hours I would isolate us anyway. Also to make sure no cough developed.

But the temperature had dropped by the evening of second day and was gone the next morning, so was there for less than 24 hours. I spoke to nursery and set out what had happened and what the nurse and GP had said, and they were happy for me to bring him in as they were satisfied the temperature was due to the jabs. As it was I only took him for one day then decided to remove him anyway.

No more temperature at all.

He screamed bloody murder the first couple of nights after the jab poor thing, clearly made him feel shit.

Hope everyone's DCs are doing ok. Jabs are rubbish (but important!)
