Coronavirus only highlighted because it effects the rich

I am rather annoyed today with a good friend. We ended up having a heated debate. She said Coronavirus has only been highlighted because It effects the rich. She said those who have money and went skiing are now amongst those who have tested positive. Also, affluent areas of London have people who tested positive. Finally she said various famous people are in self-isolation. All who have money. I think this is a pathetic argument. Coronavirus does not select wealthy/poor victims. It attacks all. Also, I am angry at the suggestion, that we would not have had the publicity had it not been for “rich” persons life being effected. AIBU to be so annoyed?

Honestly, who cares. It can affect anybody and is very serious, world wide. Now is not the time for worrying about who gets it worse or where.

You have made some very valid points. While the OP's friend may well have been somewhat glib in her approach, there is an element of truth in her argument.

Travel is the reason that CV has spread. Developed countries, relocations and global multi nationals, employment, holidays etc, have contributed to the spread of the virus. There was little preparation for this crisis and the most vulnerable in society will be the biggest victims.

OP, your friend does have a point. Albeit her delivery may well have been shit. I sont think she is the idiot others have made her out to be.

Thank you all for taking the time to share your views. Some interesting points raised. Agree if you don’t have much money in your bank account and you are unable to work (whether due to self-isolation or forced lockdown) you are in a different position to someone who is able to lead a more comfortable life albeit housebound too. It was good to share the post and to read your comments... I am no longer angry with her. As mentioned, I do believe she has a chip on her shoulder and it showed today.
