Foreign Travel Advice... Does this mean we will get a refund?

So the headline is DO NOT TRAVEL: FCO advises Britons against all but essential travel outside UK for 30 days

www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/1256338/FCO-travel-advice-coronavirus-travel-abroad-banned-foreign-office

We don't travel until August but does this mean we can now say to Virgin that they should be processing a refund for us as the FCO has banned travel?

Doesn't sound like a "ban" to me ....

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 17/03/2020 14:18

I would have thought refunds are only available for people travelling in the next 30 days 🤔

TheCanterburyWhales · 17/03/2020 14:20

Most airlines are offering a free change of flight or a voucher for travel up to 31/5 only at the moment.
Not sure about packages.

Redazzy · 17/03/2020 14:21

From Martin Lewis on Twitter - From Martin Lewis - Foreign Office now advising against all but essential travel ANYWHERE outside UK initally for 30 days.

This is the key trigger for most travel insurance policies so if you have a trip booked in that time - you are usually due a refund even if flight/hotel still on. Pls share.

We're booked to go away end of June to Spain. We've had an email from our travel place to say they are currently looking at departures at the start if April so I assume they will get to us at some point later

cjt110 · 17/03/2020 14:23

And the FCO page says:

COVID-19 Exceptional Travel Advisory Notice
As countries respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, including travel and border restrictions, the FCO advises British nationals against all but essential international travel. Any country or area may restrict travel without notice.

Erm, no you won’t be eligible for a refund/ insurance claim as you aren’t travelling in the next 30 days!

cjt110 · 17/03/2020 14:24

FCO page doesn't say 30 days which is why I am unsure and is not country specific..

We are due to fly to Spain in two weeks. Spain is on lock down and the FCO have advised against travel. But as things stand, our airline (Ryanair) are not cancelling flights and therefore not giving refunds. We can change our flights (we don't want to), but not cancel.
We do have travel insurance so we will get our money back somehow, but until either Uk or Spanish govt ban all travel (a ban, not an advisory), Ryanair will stick to their money-grabbing guns and not refund.
... and yes I know "you get what you pay for" etc etc

cjt110 · 17/03/2020 14:25

Its all very unclear.

As the advice changes all the time you have to wait and see. Do not cancel as you will not get your money back. You have to wait and see. If the FCO are still satying no travel covering Uugust then yoyr holiday will be cancelled and you should get your money back. Check your travel insurance and make sure it has the clause, travel disruption covered. Sit it out and wait until July

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 17/03/2020 14:27

It is actually very clear

TheCanterburyWhales · 17/03/2020 14:30

If it's a flight only and it's cancelled it will be the airline that refunds.

dementedpixie · 17/03/2020 14:30

I'm just waiting it out to see how things are closer to the holiday.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 17/03/2020 14:30

@NotPennysBoat
I think Spain will follow Italy and ban flights. Amazingly Ryanair were brilliant and 3 clicks on the App full refund including the return flights which were outside of the ban dates. Hang on until closer to the time. do nothing, odds are they will cancel

SoupDragon · 17/03/2020 14:30

FCO page doesn't say 30 days

But you are not travelling now which is when the advice is valid for. It's not valid for August
