Good news for anyone concerned about not being able to get a refund. Terrible news for the aviation and tourism industry.
But its not a decision they would have taken lightly.

Initial period of 30 days with the possibility of extension.

does this count though seeing as its just advisory? We are supposed to be going to Turkey in next 4 weeks, if we cancel does this mean we will be refunded?

SistemaAddict · 17/03/2020 14:06

What happens to those who left just before this announcement came in?

MitebiteonFrightNite · 17/03/2020 14:21

If the foreign and commonwealth Office advises against all but essential travel to somewhere, you will get refunded. Holidays are not essential.
If you've just gone on holiday, firstly you're daft, but secondly you will be able to fly home. Whether you'll be in enforced quarantine when you arrive home I don't know. But I don't think anyone will be stuck.

My parents are in New Zealand Sad I hope they don’t get stuck out there!

H1978 · 17/03/2020 14:26

Does it mean if you decide to go after the 30 days are up and then the decision may come later to again stop people coming back to the uk, if you’re still away, then you won’t be allowed back in?

Confused hope that sentence makes sense?

crustycrab · 17/03/2020 14:32

"If you've just gone on holiday, firstly you're daft, but secondly you will be able to fly home."

Not true. He made it very clear that that was not the case in his announcement! He said it's unrealistic to think it will be possible to repatriate all of those currently travelling abroad. His words were costly, complicated, unrealistic....

crustycrab · 17/03/2020 14:34

No H it means if you ignore this advice and can't get back you won't be assisted with repatriation and you should be realistic about the disruption to your life indefinitely.

The current advice is regarding global travel for the next 30 days. It will be reviewed.

H1978 · 17/03/2020 15:16

Thanks crustycrab it’s best to heed the advice especially as it’s the best way to contain the virus instead of spreading it to other places or catch and bring it to the uk

I’d hate to be ill in another country and then not know if and when id be gonna be able to come home

crustycrab · 17/03/2020 15:33

Definitely. Anyone who travels now is an utter fool

SistemaAddict · 17/03/2020 15:37

I agree, utter twats. Well, my relatives were warned! Serves them right if they get stuck out there. Muppets.

PilatesPeach · 17/03/2020 15:53

So just to clarify my Air Malta flight in 2 weeks and my BA return in 3 weeks will be refunded? This is what I am hoping for but nothing yet on their respective websites when I look at my booking (although appreciate may be too soon for them to have updated) thanks

crustycrab · 17/03/2020 15:54

Check their Facebook pages. Might have something on there

PilatesPeach · 17/03/2020 15:58

thanks - nothing as yet - last updates a few days ago. Will wait and see - sounds like they will be cancelling everything

TheCanterburyWhales · 17/03/2020 16:04

Check the airlines. If the airlines decide not to fly you will be refunded by them. As the FCO is just "advice" it would depend on your insurance policy as to whether they will refund
The general ones have that clause which says they will not refund unless the airline has not been permitted to fly.
Holidays- again check your operator or policy.

PilatesPeach · 17/03/2020 16:20

Thanks - there are still 14 days to go before my flight so may change in the meantime - probably will.
