Just been told I'm probably out of a job

Just been told at work that if we go into lockdown it is likely this month's paycheck will be my last....

I'm just about to move house (private rental) so my savings have been depleted by that...

Anyone else on the same boat?

Not exactly, but I wanted to show some support. It sounds scary and I'm sorry you're having to face it.

My DP is self-employed and several of his clients are facing having to delay/cancel their plans and events that he is lined up to work on. His company is him and one other and they don't have anything to cushion a big blow.
I'm self-employed too but (hopefully) in an industry that is more likely to weather the storm.

It is scary times for us all, though.

DamsonDress · 17/03/2020 11:38

I'm so sorry.

What industry are you in?

I hope it doesn't come to that but if it does I hope there will be some help for you.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 17/03/2020 11:41

Sadly I fear we will be hearing this a lot

How are business like restaurants, bar, hotels etc going to survive this. Unemployment is going to be high when all this is over. Tough times are ahead

RiftGibbon · 17/03/2020 11:55

We're a one income household and DH is self employed. He's had four cancellations this week where he is supposed to go and give talks.
Don't know how things will pan out.

Franticbutterfly · 17/03/2020 14:15

I'm very sorry to hear that OP. I was laid off today (zero hours contract doing admin in a hospital).

StarUtopia · 17/03/2020 14:22

Very sorry to hear this. We are in the same boat. Very scary times.

I honestly hope the government has some plan to help us all out as you can't literally have this many people with no income, mortgages, and bills to pay and no way of getting any income.

benadrylcucumberpatch · 17/03/2020 14:27

I'm in retail, nothing vital like supermarkets.

The problem is timing as well, as it's very seasonal here and Easter is vital as it's the start of the season, I can see many businesses here going bust within the next few months

Lots of my friends in the theatre industry lost their jobs last night.

meredithgrey1 · 17/03/2020 14:40

The company DH works for has said similar. This month he'll be paid, next month they'll be reducing to skeleton staff, and it's not clear yet who that will be. My job is safe for now, but DH earns more than me and we'll struggle without his salary.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 17/03/2020 14:41

My friends DH works at a London airport and has not had his contract renewed so is now out of a job. My DD is in clothes retail and is waiting for the inevitable as the shopping centre is almost bare most days. My DH is a self employed contractor and I'm dreading him being without work. I think there are a lot of people facing the same. Tough times.

motortroll · 17/03/2020 14:42

@hopeyousteponalego

My husband runs an agency for aerospace contractors. We're also in the shit. My sympathies ☹️

amazedmummy · 17/03/2020 14:43

DH is a chef so it's when not if.

GreenWheat · 17/03/2020 14:44

I had to lay off 35% of my staff today. Worst day ever.

jogonlll · 17/03/2020 14:44

I was made redundant on 10th march and due to start new job next Monday. Just been told they can't take me on... And have no idea when they can.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 17/03/2020 14:45

My other DD works in a supermarket and they're currently advertising for temps for 8 weeks to help out with the current mania. If you're laid off it might be worth checking with your local supermarkets to see if they're taking on.
