Why not keep schools open just for essential workers?

If the reason they're keeping schools open is because they don't want essential workers e.g. NHS staff to struggle to get to work, why not keep school open only for those workers and send everyone else home?

Surely that'd save lives as children are little potential superspreaders, running about!

And reading the comments on DD's class whatsapp, looks like there's going to be loads of kids with coronavirus in schools as many parents aren't clear on whether their DC's symptoms count and haven't yet got the message that they need to keep the whole family off if one is ill.

Can you self isolate for two weeks because someone in your household has symptoms? By that time, I’m sure all the schools will be closed.

That is what they are doing where I live. The schools closed on Monday, but they will take children where both parents or gaurdians, or children of single parents, are essential workers. You need to complete a registration form with all details, including what days/times are needed.

Essential work is considered to be:
Healthcare profession
Police, fire department
Food production, distribution and sale
Infrastructure (electricity, gas, water, telecommunications)
Refuse disposal
Transport services
Education and support area

Venus that’s what I want here. I don’t know why we must have this shambolic approach which is causing so much extra stress on everyone and increasing infection rates.

Jiggy self isolate for 14 days by the end of this schools will most like be shut.

VenusOfWillendorf · 18/03/2020 17:55

Great to see sense had prevailed!!

Excellent news about the schools, and exactly what some of us were saying here.

Do you think, perhaps, Number 10 have realised they're just not in touch with the population and are looking to MN for policy?

Are we basically running the country now? Grin

Yes, the right decision. It should have been done last Thursday. But at least it is happening now. Will anyone be foolish enough to send their kids in over the next two days?
