AIBU to think isolating the elderly is the best option?

And if they look after grandkids that needs to stop. Communities (not the elderly) need to work together for childcare pooling.

Let everyone else get the herd immunity while keeping society going. Keeping food in the shops etc.

If not the elderly, then we’ll all end up in lockdown.

If you can’t see this, you do not understand how bad things could get.

I’d hate to be front line NHS right now, for what’s to come. I’d hate to be one who decides who gets one of the 5000 UK ventilators

Lockdown of the over 60s wasn’t mentioned today, but surely it’s the least bad option

Checks on doors? Really? What are they going to do, refuse entry as they are over 70? That comes across as saying the over 70s can't be trusted to make their own decisions.

If it’s not enforced people won’t do it

I think by a week on Friday we’ll all be on full lockdown anyway so it may be a moot point, unless a miracle happens

Sadly, the Coronavirus death toll is not the full story. Between a third and half of the people in ICU are age 40-55. That's a lot of the working population who will be on ventilators (or not as there won't be enough). It is unprecedented, weird, unthinkable, economically terrible, a never ending nightmare, but entirely inevitable that the only way to save lives now is to quarantine. Any work that can be kept going at low risk and any essential services will be kept going. Sadly pubs, bars and retail will suffer enormously, not to mention the tourism industry in general, but otherwise things will be closing because our teachers, firemen, bar workers and shop keepers are dead.

snowy I don't disagree that it is best for over 70s to self isolate but , trivial though it is given what we are discussing, your stereotyping is very irritating. Do you really think bingo and church are the main places we frequent?

Snowy111 · 16/03/2020 21:48

Plucked I’m as worried as you sound , but where’s your figure from about ICU. Is that UK ICU? Is it purely coronavirus ICU or normal ICU requirements?

Well the question is, will they survive this? No! So lockdown needs to happen it’s better than the alternative in my opinion

Shinesweetfreedom · 16/03/2020 21:50

Realistically they are not going to at this stage arrest over 70’s or 60’s for going out. That would take up too much resources.
But resources at hospitals will become so stretched that this age will unfortunately not be treated.I don’t know why anyone would doubt that. You have a corridor of trolleys arriving by ambulance.Over a certain age will require longer on a ventilator and longer in an Intensive Care bed.It will sadly be the grim task of doctors to have to make these life or death decisions.Save three young or one old person. That is why older people will be requested to self isolate. The choice is yours to isolate or not.The choice to get a ventilator will not be.

Snowy111 · 16/03/2020 21:51

Painted I don’t mean to offend, but I was thinking of the most popular places I know of. In my area I would also say working men’s clubs but from the announcement today they will be closing anyway I would imagine. Could be the death knell for some of them.

There’s so many in denial, that this should be the public health message

I can't understabd why elderly is so offensive when young people have been villainised for centuries and oainted as yobs, idiots, etc etc. Elderly is a lot less offensive than other terms.

I am so concerned about getting resources to the elderly, surely if the person shopping for them has Coronavirus they could infect the packaging, and who knows who's touched it in the supermarket anyway.
Staying at home will hardly keep them safe.
