What is the point of not going to a restaurant when children are swapping germs all day everyday and bringing it home to parents and then we are taking it to work?

How do you all feel about allowing your kids to play out in the street after school each evening?

As PP said, the majority don't have school age children - but a large proportion of those who need to continue working DO and closing the schools removes them from the workforce when they're needed the most.

There is some evidence that children don't catch this as often and some evidence (both from Wuhan) that they don't seem to transfer it to adults as easily. This may well be because they're more likely to asymptomatic and if you're not coughing then there's fewer droplet with which to infect other people.

it's not pointless and the more people who do it the better. going around saying it's pointless makes it more pointless. the schools should be shut but BJ is too worried about the economics as if the economics aren't going to crash down around us in a few weeks anyway.

They are inevitably going to crash at some point, but the less they crash and the shorter that time period then the less the long term repercussions will be. Some people won't be able to cope with loss of income for a week, but a lot will. As that loss of income period inreases the number who can cope drops. That's people who will face losing their homes, their jobs not being there to go back to because the businesses which employed them have folded...

The less of that which can happen then the more "normal" life will look afterwards. It's a horrible balancing act but sustaining as much of the economy as possible isn't irrelevant.
