Nursery policy on Coronavirus

My 3 year old DD has just been sent home as she had a temperature of 37.8. This is due to ear infection which she gets pretty frequently rather than being ill as such. She was fine at pick up and running round as happy as Larry with the other children. However nursery have implemented a new policy that if any any child has a temperature they need to be isolated for 7 days. This means I won’t be able to work now for the rest of the week. I’m questuoning whether nursery is right in doing this? Shouldn’t high temperature not apply to everyone, staff and children then? And shouldn’t my child have been in isolation if potential risk of spreading Coronavirus? It’s all so unclear at the moment as I feel nursery is making up its own policies. AIBU in thinking they are taking the Mickey as it’s costing me over £270 per week.

Your child need to go into self isolation as per NHS and government guidelines.

At present, there is no advice on shutting down an area or a place just because someone else is symptomatic.

The nursery are following government guidelines: any new cough or temp over 37.8 needs self isolating for 7 days. Did you not know this already?

Yep, it's basically forcing people into isolation which is correct to try and limit the spread, but by nothing actually being closed it means they don't feel the need to give any financial assistance. Enjoy.

Also my dd has fluid leaking from her ear which is why I know it’s an ear infection. This happens frequently.

It may well be an ear infection, fine. Would you still send your DC to nursery with an ear infection? Sure as shit I wouldn't want to be going to work with an ear infection and I'm a grown ass woman.

It's at or above 37.8 degrees.

It's a nightmare for parents needing childcare to work but it's the government's and NHS's advice and it's what all schools and nurseries should be following.

Policy does apply to staff too! We are short staffed today, 2 staff have a cough, 1 has a temp- all feel well enough to work but we have to abide by govt guidelines

Ok everyone. Thanks for confirming I totally AIBU.

It’s really is difficult with managing work, childcare and the costs at this time. I do know health comes first.

And yes I’m afraid my dd does have frequent ear infections and does go to nursery with it. It comes and goes a lot so it would be difficult to stay at home with her when it’s not something that persists. She is happily playing since being at home. But I know from time to time she will want a cuddle as it will be hurting her. But it’s minutes rather than all day. I don’t get paid if I stay at home you see so it’s not always easy.

Our nursery has the same policy. We’re now checking DDs temperature every morning before we get in the car and putting her jumper in her bag rather than letting her wear it in because DD and DH are the type of people that are always very warm anyway so the nursery seem to check her temperature constantly.

It's stupid advice because it contradicts itself. You have to self isolate for 7 days with a temp or/and cough yet the people you've been around such as colleagues and children at nurseries don't

The isolation is assuming the worst and keeping you away to stop spread. But surely other children around the child should also isolate too then? Since they've been in extremely close proximity and are the most unhygienic beings of all time

Yes our nursery and childminder are the same, tbh I'm worried about it as our kids often get bugs and it might not be corona but then I guess its better to be safe than sorry. Work are not going to be happy if me or DH are off loads though. The only good thing is nursery have said if a child is excluded due to high temp we wont have to pay. Childminder I doubt will do the same though (understandably) and I'm not sure what will happen if they close (they've not clarified the payment situation in that case).

As suspected I’ve just had the dreaded call from nursery to say DDs temp is too high and she’s now excluded for 7 days.

If she’s caught it then she could only have got it from someone at nursery anyway as it’s the only place she’s been for the last two weeks! I suspect the nursery will be half empty by Wednesday.
