Why aren't we doing what every other country is doing?
Over half a million have already signed this petition.

They will close, there is no point closing them now though as travel etc isn't heavily restricted. My guess would be it will coincide with the over 70s and vulnerable being advised to stay in, as they know people will still let their children out as has happened in most other countries until tougher measures were introduced.

Butterwhy · 16/03/2020 08:05

As has been said, to be closed for several months as apposed to when the time is right will be catastrophic for some children, sadly.

BonnesVacances · 16/03/2020 08:06

What about children of delivery drivers? People who work in retail? People who are on zero hours contracts? Self employed?

Tbh I'm not at all supportive of my DH being used by the government to simply provide childcare so other people can go to work. I'm not sure who decided their need to work trumps his health, and more importantly DD's who is immunosupressed.

In practice I'm supportive of herd immunity and everyone doing their bit. But it's the assumption that some people and their families are more expendable or that other people's jobs are more important that I object to.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 16/03/2020 08:12

I imagine this was signed by half a million SAHP on who closing the schools with have zero financial impact

beebyjeeby · 16/03/2020 08:18

or that other people's jobs are more important that I object to.

People who are on the front line & will be saving life's are definitely doing more important jobs than me.

Butterwhy · 16/03/2020 08:21

that other people's jobs are more important that I object to

In this scenario it's true though, some jobs are going to be more important in keeping the country fed, providing medical care and keeping utilities up and running. It doesn't mean that overall they are more important, just in this particular situation they definitely are.

beebyjeeby · 16/03/2020 08:23

But we are talking about this scenario...

FirTree31 · 16/03/2020 08:26

People on the front line do have more important jobs than say mine in HR or teachers. Those who have a health condition, I belive, probably shouldn't be at school/work (if practical). However, from the policy I've seen there seems to be a black hole, there are implementations for those with children off due to Covid-19, or those employees off due to Covid-19, but those who have children who have no care provisions are skipped completly. And income, will those people signing petitions to close schools support those who then cannot buy electricity or food, or schooling resources such as paint, paper, pencils.

Look at the science rather than knee jerk reactions from foreign politicians who want to be seen to be doing something. We are past containing it, it's too virulent so we should expect most people to catch it, herd immunity then can protect the most vulnerable who should be quarantined now. If you have kids with underlying health conditions keep them off, similarly if you have moderate to severe asthma for instance, distance yourself now, for the rest of us, wash your hands, keep calm and carry on.

Disclaimer, I'm not personally a scientist but my good friend is and is in charge of the response at our local county council. This has worked for other outbreaks of similar diseases.

Butterwhy · 16/03/2020 08:29

I know @beebyjeeby, it was in response to @BonnesVacances (if your comment was aimed at me).

beebyjeeby · 16/03/2020 08:32

apologies @Butterwhy

MummyPop00 · 16/03/2020 08:35

Simple, give parents the choice NOW without penalty.

Reginabambina · 16/03/2020 08:36

What about all the other countries keeping them open? What about the countries closing borders?

MummyPop00 · 16/03/2020 08:40

Keep them open, yes you can isolate the old & but I’ll wager there will be a run on the NHS anyway through sheer numbers catching it & the % getting a more serious case

More sensible to at least give parents the option now in the hope it slows this thing & the rate of infection down

FirTree31 · 16/03/2020 08:49

Giving the choice now, for people that can have their children at home sounds really sensible
