What is the difference between a Coronavirus persistent cough and you child having an annoying cough?

Daughter has what I’d call an annoying cough. In ordinary times I’d send her to school tomorrow but she travels on a bus and train every day (we’re in London it’s 40mins door to door and 10 mins on an overly packed train) 2 of her classmates were off last week. One of the kids was saying their name mum came back from Italy with a fever a couple of weeks ago; refused to get tested and all of a sudden while I’m typing this I think.... yes self isolation. But she doesn’t have a fever and non of us do. It just seems like on one hand I’m over reacting to the symptoms but... these are strange times... So I’m asking the hive mind, I’m not being bonkers to isolate the lot of us am I.

If it’s a new cough, she has to isolate.

Chances are school will send her home anyway.

If she has a new cough (one she hasn’t had for ages) then yes you need to keep her off and she needs to be isolated for 7 days.

The rest of the family don’t need to isolate if they don’t have symptoms, but then she’d need to stay in one room/separate bathroom and have food brought to her. Or you all self isolate for 7 days with her (and the 7 days starts again if any of you develop cough or fever).

The thing is that this virus can have very minor symptoms (mild cough) in some people and very serious symptoms in others. Hence the seemingly draconian response to mild symptoms.

My son has had a new cough as of this morning and doesn't feel well. I'm self-isolating me and 2 dcs....

In the grand scheme of things seven days to stop multiple others getting ill . Or seven days of aww we made a mistake it’s just a cold! Seven days isn’t a lot really when my parents could be facing months at home..

There’s no question here. Anyone with a new cough or fever must self isolate. There’s no “unless you think it’s a cold”.

Totally agree.

Especially as it is said to be v v mild in children.
