Unless students need to physically sit the exam apparently they will get a pass for Yr 1 and 2?

So are they sending students home then?

ssd · 15/03/2020 19:20

Don't know. Just heard this. It does seem sensible though. If it's true.

A pass? That's it?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 15/03/2020 19:27

Oh that probably doesn't count toward the final grade though does it?

ssd · 15/03/2020 19:48

Not really sure TBH.

Heard this from a friend. Think it would mean year 1 and 2 wouldn't sit end of year exams.

I’m a lecturer - although not at Edinburgh - and this seems unlikely to me. I suspect that exams have been replaced with coursework, done over a timed period and submitted through an online portal.

Dreamersandwishers · 15/03/2020 19:56

Judy is right. They are working on continuous assessment on coursework, so some students may not pass.
They’ve made it clear they will not devalue their degrees.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 15/03/2020 19:56

THAT makes way more sense

DrWAnker · 15/03/2020 19:57

All 1st and 2nd year exams are cancelled...nothing about it being a pass though.
3rd and 4th year exams are online and all teaching will be online from 23rd.

Invisimamma · 15/03/2020 19:58

I went to Edinburgh. 1st and 2nd year exams didn't count towards final degree result, you only needed to pass to continue onto the next year. Only my 4th year results contributed to my actual degree classification (3rd and 4th year for some courses).

I know quite a few people who dropped out because they failed 2nd year exams.

zafferana · 15/03/2020 20:00

Yammy sods, if so! I only passed my 2nd year exams by a whisker and was nearly thrown out, so to get a pass for doing fuck all is amazing.

FlorencesHunger · 15/03/2020 20:00

judy I am at a Edinburgh Uni and added coursework hasn't been mentioned in replacing exams but that would make more sense than a blanket pass. I have a take home exam that could still go ahead but my tutor for that course doesn't know if that will go ahead yet either. 3 weeks of strikes then this, meaning only 5 of contact learning out of 11.Sad

ssd · 15/03/2020 20:05

Yes students have had a hellish time of it. I hope the 4th Yr students have this reflected in their final classifications.

Medical students in Ireland have had their final exams brought forward to this month so they can start working earlier Sad

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/03/2020 20:19

florence we’re still teaching as usual, but I know some unis here have made provisions for distance assessment. Maybe Edinburgh aren’t though? I think we are going to be like the band in the Titanic at my place...!

FlorencesHunger · 15/03/2020 20:38

Edinburgh have mentioned online learning and possibly recorded lectures but no mention of assessments yet. News only came out on friday so there will be more info to come. I don't mind so much but feel with the strikes and now this, it will be a struggle to get through to the end of this for me, I haven't had a single lecture since February break. Have dc at home so if corona situation escalates and we are stuck at home together it will make studying much more difficult.

Not complaining more resigned to it now.

BlueBirdGreenFence · 15/03/2020 20:45

Lots of the Edinburgh lecturers are still on strike so alternative coursework can't be set.
