Would you go to Japan right now?

Family member has left this morning to travel round Japan for a few months. They are young and generally healthy but I think a bit naive, I don’t think they’ve booked any travel insurance.

No insurance seemed daft to me anyway when they’re going to be doing some adventure sports out there but even more so now in case they get ill. I think the Japanese health system is very good though?

How is Japan doing now? Would you go? Am I a bit silly to worry they’ve been a bit reckless?

Having no insurance is stupid even without coronavirus. Japan is an advanced country which would mean things would be expensive if your relative needed any kind of care.
Not sure how the situation is there right now and everything is changing so fast anyway...

Yeah the no insurance frustrated me leaving out corona but they’re an adult and not my adult child so nothing I could do apart from suggest it. 99% sure it was ignored.

Travelling anywhere without decent health insurance is unbelievably stupid regardless of corona. Let alone if you’re taking part in some adventure sports.
Throw corona virus into the mix (and yes, Japan is currently dealing with 800+ cases and

Posted too soon!
But basically they’re a walking advert for the Darwin awards

And should they need healthcare, they will have a very large bill for it.

I would probably take out insurance on their behalf if I was bothered enough to post on MN about it. I take out insurance for a weekend in Paris.

Being a bit reckless it to put it very mildly indeed.

You can’t take out insurance once somebody has departed. I travel quite a lot myself and on every policy I have bought you have to get it before leaving.

I’d like to spend a few months in Japan - they get people better from corona virus!

OP unless your relative brought travel insurance as soon as they booked the tickets and Japan had now been on the banned travel list by the Foreign Office, they wouldn't have got their money back.

Ffs people need to stop travelling right now. Either stop in case you get the virus and bring it home or in case you bring the virus to the other country.

People need to stop being so selfish about this just because it largely affects the elderly and people with compromised immune systems doesn't mean the rest of us don't have a responsibility.

OP, your family member is being selfish. So are anyone who travels for unnecessary reasons atm
