Getting a (Chinese) takeaway

Mamato2gorgeousboys · 14/03/2020 13:22

Mumsnetters... Im not sure whether I’m underestimating Covid-19 or whether my curtain twitching neighbour is being dramatic.

I arrived home from taking ds to his swimming class this morning and my neighbour came out to say hello - whilst making clear she’s standing 3 metres away because if I were to cough or sneeze, she’s still safe Hmm. She asked our plans for the weekend and I casually said we’re going to chill out, maybe go to the park and order a Chinese for dinner tonight. She looked absolutely horrified and said to not order any takeaways, especially not Chinese. I said that I’m sure it’d be fine and that Deliveroo and just eat have announced contactless deliveries. She kept saying that it’s not safe as it could be on the containers, on the sides as it the germs for a long time on metal etc.

Am I being unsafe? She watches a lot of news and is loving the drama. Lots of small business’ will really suffer if this is everyone’s attitude but she kept insisting that everyone she knows won’t be ordering anything for the foreseeable.

For those avoiding takeaways, is it certain ones? For how long do you plan on doing this?

I’m not sure whether I’m the batshit one or she is. This Coronavirus thing is making me question my sanity Grin

Your neighbour is bat shit. Just because it’s a Chinese doesn’t mean it is any more of a risk than pizza/fish and chips/Indian. My Nan is Chinese, she hasn’t been back to China in 20 years- does that mean I should avoid her?

TheGinGenie · 14/03/2020 13:25

Your neighbour is being racist

MrsIronfoundersson · 14/03/2020 13:26

Had one last night - delicious!

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 14/03/2020 13:28

Your neighbour is thick as shit

AvocadoOwl · 14/03/2020 13:28

We've been having more Chinese takeaways than usual to our support our local given that racist idiots aren't spending their money there.

Poppydaisies · 14/03/2020 13:30

Personally I'd rather spend less money and cook my own food.

bluebluezoo · 14/03/2020 13:30

Round my way people are deliberately choosing chinese takeaway to support the community. There’s a thread on FB local page.

Businesses are really going to struggle if essentially boycotted because of stupidity.

There is no more risk from a chinese takeaway than any other nationality.

Bet she still eats pizza.....

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/03/2020 13:31

What an idiot, i had 1 last night.

strawberrylipgloss · 14/03/2020 13:34

If your neighbor thinks Chinese takeaways are "contaminated", I assume that she's not buying stuff from Italy like pizza too. Hmm Does she really think Chinese takeaways order their containers from different places than others like Indian takeaways?

Tootletum · 14/03/2020 13:35

She's an idiot sorry.

anon2020202020 · 14/03/2020 13:42

Your neighbours a dick.

DettolsYourFriend · 14/03/2020 13:43

Personally I'd rather spend less money and cook my own food

Good for you poppy. Thanks for the utterly pointless insight.

Thegreymethod · 14/03/2020 13:47

Is she saying don't get any take away or specifically don't get a Chinese one? If it's one surly any food containers tins/packets etc could be "contaminated" everything that you get off a shelf could have been around people with it? and if it's specifically the Chinese then she's just being racist.

RasberryRoyale · 14/03/2020 13:49

I have a family member like this. He will not touch a Chinese but will go to our local Italian restaurant as in his mind that’s different as none of them have been home to Italy recently. (Huge assumption)

Rhubarbpeony · 14/03/2020 13:50

She’s just a xenophobic weirdo. Your local Chinese is no more of a risk than a packet of chicken you pick up in Tesco. Ignore the batshittery, there’s going to be plenty of it!

RozHuntleysStump · 14/03/2020 14:01

I’ve ordered 2 chineses in the last couple of weeks. It’s not my favourite but I’m trying to help keep them going. Poor sods. So much nonsense around.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 14/03/2020 14:04

I want a Chinese now but I've booked a table for the Indian tonight- for that yabu haha

Soph7777 · 14/03/2020 14:09

Ffs this mentality is sickening. It's fucking stupid.

The disease is not hereditary so how can a Chinese person in the U.K. be more prone to it?

In the same way I appreciate they may have visited China, but so could a British person have?!!!

Are they also now avoiding Italian and Spanish restaurant.

It's just...ridiculous

Get a grip

virginpinkmartini · 14/03/2020 14:10

I wouldn't assume he was racist, as I'm sure it wouldnt matter whether the disease originated from Ireland, Belgium or Cuba.

He's ignorant, sure. But let's not throw the 'racist' label around without knowing someone's intent.

Mamato2gorgeousboys · 14/03/2020 14:11

Thanks for the replies everyone.

She meant all takeaways I think, we just happened to be talking about Chinese as it’s the one I mentioned. She’s ignorant but I wouldn’t say she’s racist. She the panic buyer with stashes of bog roll under the stairs 😂🤣

In China the government allowed deliveries of take out food to continue, they leave it on the step. My friend has used this frequently in Yunming, he is still alive and well, albeit suffering from cabin fever.

Mlou32 · 14/03/2020 14:47

The neighbour isn't "disgusting", "racist", "stupid" etc. She is misinformed and frightened and is acting irrationally.

AvocadoOwl · 14/03/2020 14:56

You could apply that to all sorts though- Islamaphobia for example. Ignorance doesn't make it ok Confused

It's well documented that Chinese people in the UK have been victims of horrendous racism in response to COVID-19. Not wanting to buy your usual Chinese takeaway because Chinese people are making the food IS racist. To call it anything else is wrong, we shouldn't be making excuses for this sort of discrimination.

Soph7777 · 14/03/2020 15:38

@AvocadoOwl you are spot on.

Ignorance is NO excuse for racism.

People avoiding Chinese food because of COVID - 19 is literally the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It's worrying that we are living amongst a society with people this fucking stupid.

Especially with the internet you'd have though someone could google the answer and find that Chinese people on
The U.K. are no more prone to it than anyone else.

Your friend needs to go read a fucking book.

Sorry for swearing but seriously THIS annoys me. And is the same reason people struggle to get jobs, housing, education because of stereotypes and racism like this.

Literally Chinese takeaways owners are facing losing their livelihood and being able to feed their family because of this stupidity.
